Description:This session was recorded by Natalia Aralova and Daria Bikina in July 2017. The main speaker is Galina Ivanovna Kandakova, in the last part Daria Ivanovna Nadeina also comments on the subject. The transcription and translation were made by Natalia Aralova and checked with Antonina V. Kazarova, then glossed by Natalia Aralova. It was recorded in two locations: right outside the village Vladimirovka and in the kitchen of Daria Ivanovna Nadeina. In the recording APN_3lechenie (Urine therapy // Лечение мочой), the speaker Anna Porfir’evna Nadeina mentions a plant called bələkakta in Negidal, a kind of meadowsweet. It is widely used for treatment of various skin diseases. Galina Ivanovna Kandakova agreed to find this plant for us and to show how to prepare it so that it can be used for treatment. First, we went outside to find it and to cut off several branches and then we came to Daria Ivanovna’s house to prepare it. The session consists of three parts: two videos about searching the right branches of this plant and one video about preparing it. The first one is mostly in Negidal; the second one is mostly in Russian (so it is only transcribed in Russian and translated into English). The first half of the third video shows Galina Ivanovna speaking Negidal and the second half is mostly in Russian, because Daria Ivanovna entered the kitchen and started speaking Russian. For the recording, we used the video camera Panasonic HC-V770 and the audio recorder Olympus LS-14 with a directional microphone. Natalia Aralova was holding the camera and Daria Bikina was responsible for the sound recording. The MTS video files were later converted to mp4 and the sound file was extracted to use in ELAN.
This project focuses on the documentation of Negidal, a highly moribund Northern Tungusic language spoken by at most a handful of individuals on the Amgun’ and Lower Amur rivers in the Russian Federation. The language comprises two dialects, Upper and Lower Negidal, of which the latter might already be extinct. The project will result primarily in an extensive corpus of interlinearized texts from the Upper dialect together with accompanying audio recordings.
