Description:THIS BUNDLE IS NOT FULLY CURATED YET. IT IS ALSO GOING THROUGH COMMUNITY VETTING. THEREFORE, IT IS NOT TO BE USED TILL FUTHER NOTICE. This bundle contains a series of recordings (originally taken as about 1000 files) with Babu Sakrinsow (whose surname was formerly 'Regisow', and changed when the clans of the Village of Sakrin decided that they would adopt the surname 'Sakrinsow' in 2011). The recordings come from a list prepared by Vijay D'Souza and Dorjee Jebisow in the summer of 2014, encompasing all possible combinations of phonemes in the Hrusso Aka language. This list serves as part of the base resources utilised for my phonological analysis of the language. However, I have not used this list for tonal analysis. Due to the inevitable list intonation in such recordings, it could afford only limited insight into tones. The procedure of recording was as follows: I prompt the word once, Babu repeats it and gives its meaning in Hindi, then he repeats the word three times, and makes a sentence of his own composition using the word. These sentences are sometimes repeated a second or a third time. A mirror was placed beside the speaker to show the profile of his mouth movements as described in Ladefoged (2003). The place of recording: St. Xavier's School, Lepang Huda (Lower Bhalukpong) Equipment used: video - Canon XA20 video camera audio - Audio technica 803B lavalier microphones still - Canon 700D, Canon PowerShot 300 (for metadata photos) mirror Recording conditions: Recording in studio-like conditions in the basement of St. Xavier's School, Lepang Huda (Lower Bhalukpong). The 'studio' was an impromtu one, made by myself, by covering walls with mattresses and the ceiling with foam to reduce echo.
Born in Karnataka, India. Working in Northeast India as a Jesuit since 1999. Currently doing a DPhil (PhD) in linguistics at the University of Oxford, UK (Thesis: A Grammar of Hrusso Aka). Founder and leader of the Hrusso Literature Team, formed in 2017.
Age is self-assessed. Original village: Sakrin, now resident in Lepang Huda
