Description:Wondu Sooddo demonstrates the sound of the b'ita-horn in audio file 001 and 002. The b'ita is a small horn of a dógá- or gabár-antelope that is played in the processions (kórz) on the way to the mourning ceremonies (see the photo linked to this session). Wondu performs a wedding song, asshamo, on the lyre (file 003). File 004 is a lyre song called maakkíra, which is played in the shooda-rhythm; according to Wondu, the song is not restricted to specific occasions. File 005 is a lyre song in the kaldi baaba-rhythm. Finally, the lyre song in File 006 was named halla (~ hallo).
Wondu is a farmer living in Bayo Boraza. He is a lyre musician well known in the Baskeet area, who has sometimes been booked for cultural events organised by the Baskeet woreda in Laska and been sent to national cultural events to represent the Baskeet community. Apart from the lyre (zimbi), he plays a small bamboo-flute (biilim). Wondu learnt to play the lyre from his foster father. Wondu is Ts'apano Aamintso's husband.
Yvonne Treis is a linguist and works on Ethiopian languages at CNRS in France.
