Description:Messele Lipaato first plays part of his repertoire of shulshula songs. The shulshula is a bamboo flute that made from a piece of bamboo between two joints, it has four holes (see photo linked to this session). Meselle first plays five wedding songs (file 001-004). Their titles are as follows: olale (alternative name: laalli polide) (file 001), boyoye boolime (file 002), gayno woyoye (file 003 up to 2:20), hay(e) gaabe zinaab soolinondo (file 003 starting at 2:20), alambushe (file 004). Then he continues with a lyre performance, the autobiographical songs that he playse are: Wolaitta (file 005), Alammi (file 006) and Addisaabi lukkine ('I have travelled to Addis Ababa') (file 007). The audio recordings were made in hi home in Awra-Soosta. For a video-taped version of the last song, Addisaabi lukkine, see session ML2012-01-18_001-005.
Yvonne Treis is a linguist and works on Ethiopian languages at CNRS in France.
Messele is a farmer from Awra Soosta and a passionate musician. He plays the lyre and the bamboo-flute (shulshula). He is the nephew of another lyre player, Lanc'o Lodo, who was recorded in the project. Messele is a father of small children.
