Description:Ambaye Tsedeke Tirpe interviews the lyre and flute musician Messele Lipaato from Awra-Soosta about his biography, his learning history, his repertoire and the occasions at which he makes music. The photo linked to this session shows Ambaye on the left and Messele on the right.
Ambaye was trained as a teacher and worked at different schools in the Basketo Special Woreda. At the time of the Baskeet documentation project he was one of the very free Baskeet native speakers who were fluent in English. In his freetime he worked as an assistant in the documentation project, carried out interviews, assisted in the transcription and translation and was a consultant in grammar and lexicon elicitation sessions.
Yvonne Treis is a linguist and works on Ethiopian languages at CNRS in France.
Messele is a farmer from Awra Soosta and a passionate musician. He plays the lyre and the bamboo-flute (shulshula). He is the nephew of another lyre player, Lanc'o Lodo, who was recorded in the project. Messele is a father of small children.
