Koro is an Oceanic (Austronesian) language spoken by several hundred people on Manus and Los Negros islands, approximately 200 miles off the north coast of the Papua New Guinea mainland. This documentation consists primarily of recorded narratives and conversations in the Papitalai dialect, spoken in Papitalai, Riu Riu, and Naringel villages.
Jessica Cleary-Kemp is the PI on the project. She conducted the research on Koro during her tenure as a PhD candidate at the University of California, Berkeley.
Mary Clara is the daughter of John Kris Lopwar Hinduwan. Her mother is Hikepet. She grew up in Papitalai speaking Koro and Tok Pisin as first languages, and she learnt English at school. She has traveled widely and worked a lot outside of the village, including at BP in Kokopo and at the hotel in Lorengau. When she was younger she lived in Rabaul for several years. Her English is fluent. She is Jessica Cleary-Kemp's adopted cross-cousin (tuwa).
Helen Pohu is the daughter of Kristine Pat's sister, Mathilda (Hitinde). Her step-father is Andrew Kain. She is married to Nicky, who is Titan. They live at Camp 5, which is across the water from Papitalai village, close to Poloka. She is Jessica Cleary-Kemp's adopted parallel cousin (tesi).
John Ryden is the son of Kristine Pat's sister, Mathilda (Hitinde). His step-father is Andrew Kain. He is Jessica Cleary-Kemp's adopted parallel cousin (piso).
