| Description: | In this narrative, Galina Kandakova tells a story about an old Negidal woman who takes in an orphaned Russian boy. The two live together in perfect harmony until the day when the boy fondly addresses her as “babulja”, an intimate Russian word meaning “granny”. Since “baba/babu” in Negidal has very negative connotations (it refers to the female sexual organs), the old woman gets highly upset with the boy. Recorded in 2010 by Elena Kalinina, with a first transcription and translation done by Nina Sumbatova with Galina Kandakova. Time-aligned and retranscribed in ELAN by Brigitte Pakendorf, transcription checked and translation provided by Galina Kandakova. | This project focuses on the documentation of Negidal, a highly moribund Northern Tungusic language spoken by at most a handful of individuals on the Amgun’ and Lower Amur rivers in the Russian Federation. The language comprises two dialects, Upper and Lower Negidal, of which the latter might already be extinct. The project will result primarily in an extensive corpus of interlinearized texts from the Upper dialect together with accompanying audio recordings. | ||
