Title:A new married woman joining her husband
Home
Documentation and description of Zerenkel language, an Afro-Asiatic language of Chad belonging to the East language family
Coverage:Chad
Date:2016-11-23
Description:This is a video that one of my consultants recorded when a new woman was joining her husband’s house.
Zerenkel is an undocumented and endangered language spoken by circa 3000 rural inhabitants of the Guera region of Chad. This project aims to document a range of communicative events associated with highly endangered practices such as marriage rites, which are being lost to the community, and produce a phonology and grammar sketch. Due to a number of factors, the Zerenkel language and culture is under threat. Fortunately, in 2005, members of the community formed an association to develop and promote their language. This project will be undertaken in close collaboration with the community and aims to develop multilingual language and socio-cultural resources for the community.
This video is about a new married woman going to her husband’s house. It is a real event that remains still the same and this is why I want to archive it. There are two importants parts of this video: The horse competition that is very significant in that culture because all important ceremonies must include horse competitions. Horses are prestigious animals in that culture and people use them for wars and important ceremonies. The second part of this video is the event of gifts and conversations. The local population’s solidarity is revealed in the contribution that they make to the bride to make her confortable in her matrimonial home. The conversations between the bride and the contributors reveal a lot about the zerenkel discourse, culture and language. Utterances such as ʻI ame happy you are joining your husband for ever. This is my modest contribution to accompany you. Go and be submissive to your husbandʼ explain the solidarity and the culture in this community.
Abakar Souleyman is the data collector. Actors in this video are community members attending the ceremony. There is direct communication between them.
