| Description: | This is a recording of a bird naming task in which a participant was asked to name birds shown to them in pictures. When the participant recognized and named a bird, the researcher provides the English common name. From this task, a list of bird names in Eibela was created. This session includes the audio file of the naming task and the resulting list of bird names with English translations. | |
| This project consists in the documentation of Eibela, also called Aimele (ISO-639 AIL), as part of a PhD project at James Cook University which will ultimately result in a grammar of the language along with a dictionary and a corpus of texts. Eibela is a severely endangered language with 300 speakers in Lake Campbell, Western Province in Papua New Guinea. | ||
| The participants view birds and either state the name of the bird in Eibela, or say that they do not recognize the bird species. | ||
| Dikino and Sapai are Eibela men who are participating in the naming task, while Grant is a researcher showing the pictures and transcribing the resulting bird names. Nicks is an Eibela man who is mostly spectation, but offers occassional comments. | ||
| Sapai is the head deacon and prominent community leader. Date of birth is approximate. | ||
