Contributor (consultant):Gabro Durmaz
Coverage:Germany
Date:2016-09-02
Description:Gabro tells us about an inciden where a few Qusneans met a group of Muslim women washing their clothes, and they asked them for water. The Muslim women did not give them water, since this would defile their crockery. One of the Qusneans was a deacon and knew sorcery. He wrote on his finger and made one of the women completely undress herself. Once he removed the script from his finger, she returned to normal and continued washing her clothes.
The Beth Qustan dialect of the Central Neo-Aramaic, Turoyo, which is the language of Tur 'Abdin, South Eastern Turkey, with an estimated 20 families remaining in the village. This project will document socio-cultural practices of the Turoyo speaking community in Tur 'Abdin, focusing on vernacular tales, particularly those that demonstrate cultural interaction between Muslims and Christians, including Muslim visitations to the shrines of Christian saints, and consultation of soothsayers by Christians.

Gabro was born in the village of Beth Qustan in 1950 and immegrated to Germany in 1979.
