| Description: | On Thursday before Chuseok, the biggest National Holiday of the year and day to commerate the ancestors, SUK1 went to the Sinchon Elders' Centre to bring them a gift. When he sits down with YSH1 and SYO1 just before they head back home, they thank him for the gift, and talk about the importance of showing gratitude, and sharing the memory of being grateful, and how this is linked to the transcience of life. YSH1 uses the word t͡ɕʰoloinsʰɛŋ, meaning 'life like morning dew on leaves', a metaphor for the evanescence of life. | |
| This project aims at building an annotated audio-video corpus of spoken Jejuan with a focus on conversational genres, supplementing existing documentation of narratives and songs. | ||
| Born and grown up in Sukkun (Sinchon). One of the few elders in their nineties in Sukkun, and probably the eldest. | ||
| From Sukkun/Sinchon originally. Went back and forth Jeju and Mokpo and Busan. No regular school education, except for literacy in private group study. Learnt Japanese Kana, and a bit of Hangul. Marketer and farmer. Pronounces arae-a consistenly, generally more conservative language. | ||
