Description:HSH1 sings a couple of Jejuan folk songs to SUK1, and subsequently, she explains the non-improvised text bits to SUK1 for him to write down and memorise. A big part of the session is guided by the misunderstanding that SUK1 didn't know about the greatly improvised nature of Jejuan folk songs, and therefore thought that HSH1 could teach him entire songs, with her being confused baffled because of that. She tries her best to explain to him the emotional and lifestyle background of the songs, and how she used to sing them in the past. There is no corresponding video recording for jeju0085-09.wav, since I pressed some button wrong and the video did not start properly. jeju0085-02-04.mp4 starts with HSH1 describing the setting in which 'Ieodosana', a very well-known boat song, is sung. She then proceeds to singing the boat song and a weeding song shortly after that, and then to explaining its content to SUK1. In jeju0085-05, HSH1 further explains the boat song's content, and SUK1 writes down the lyrics.
This project aims at building an annotated audio-video corpus of spoken Jejuan with a focus on conversational genres, supplementing existing documentation of narratives and songs.
Born in Jimnyeong. As a child she apparently helped out as a Somi for a Shaman, and this is how she learnt about shamanitic rites and rituals, and seems to be knowledgeable in that respect. She still is called to do private rituals at some occasions, and is confident about her shamanistic abilities. As she does work that often seems to involve soothsaying rather than taking up the social role of a major village shaman, it is not clear what her ocassional profession actually is.
Main researcher of current documentation project, as of 2016, PhD student in Linguistics at SOAS London. German-Korean descent, got to London after his BA studies.
