Description:Yaluʔ: Yaru' wordlist (S.I.L. & Mrs K. Holzknecht) Feb 14th, 1974 Note: This tape was originally digitised with Malcolm Ross' collection (MR1) as item 010. Both MR and SH agree that it should be included in this collection (SH2). . Language as given:
Format:Digitised: yes Media: Sony C60 cassette tape Audio Notes: Side A only lots of background noise (background buzz, nature sounds, etc) Original recording in stereo Digitised 24 bit 96khz Note from Julia Colleen Miller: The tape was originally found in Malcolm Ross' collection (MR1) as item 010 Malcolm pointed out that it was not his tape and that we should check with Sue Holzknecht if it was one of hers. Here is Sue's response to our query: ****************************** "I recognise my writing on the cassette sleeve, but I don't think the person eliciting the wordlist for Yaru (Aribwaungg in my thesis) in Tok Pisin is my mother-in-law. It is more likely to be an SIL person, but I don't know who that would have been in 1974. But if I listen to the tape further, I might hear whether my mother-in-law Mrs Helene Holzknecht was there or not. However, the volume is very low and it is hard to distinguish the European voice. In late February 1974 my mother and father-in-law left PNG for a lengthy furlough in Germany. My husband Hartmut, our son and I followed them on 25th March 1974. I remember that date because we left on the day before my son Martin's 1st birthday. So that recording was made shortly before they left. I did not start my own research on the Markham languages until 1984. I suggest that the tape belongs in my collection of language tapes, with the other Aribwaungg tapes, if that is OK with Malcolm. Perhaps one of us gave it to him when he was doing his research on the Oceanic languages of PNG, while he was at the Goroka Teachers College. I hope that clears up the mystery a bit. Thank you for contacting me."
