Description:Translation (Htoi San) Now I am telling a story about the spirit Hpulum Htu and two children. A long time ago, when people were not developed and lived in the jungle, at that time, people could talk with spirits. A widow had two children at that time. In the mountainous region, there was farming work, so the mother worked at a farm. She was worried about her two children. Mother was concerned about the spirit Hpulum Htu would come and eat her kids, so she prepared the food and put them inside the house and told her two children, "My children, don't open the door whoever comes and asks to open it before I come back. When I come back, I will say, 'My children, please open the door.'" The children answered, "Ok, mother." Then they stayed at home. Mother left them for cultivating at the farm. The children thought their mother went to the farm and worked there the whole day. But their mother did not show up until sunset. They waited and waited until the darkness came when they could not see the people's faces clearly. At that time, they heard someone at the door, "My children." They did not believe that was their mother as the older kid was slightly more prominent, so he understood a bit more. The elder one replied, "You are not my mother." "Of course, I am your mother. Open the door." the one at the door said. The kids responded, "No, I won't open it. You aren't my mother." That was the spirit Hpulum Htu, and she said, "I am the mother of your two siblings. The elder one said, "You are not my mom. I can't open it." The younger one missed his mother so much during that time, so he kicked the door open hurriedly as he did not know the situation. So Hpulum Htu pushed into the house at once, and then she talked to them and stayed there. The two siblings did not know what to do. The younger one was still very young. The big brother was afraid and thought about what was going on. But he knew that was Hpulum Htu. When it was nighttime and a time to sleep, the demon Hpulum Htu fried the walnuts. She fried and fried those walnuts, and she put the pot near the ashes then prepared the children to sleep. She placed the older brother behind the house, and she embraced the younger one to sleep. Soon after that, the kids fell asleep as if they did not know anything. The elder child awoke and came in a sense, and then he heard eating sounds "Hkrup Hkrup." He asked, "Mom, what are you eating?" The demon replied, "Goi, the walnuts that I fried before." So he thought it could be, and he lay down. The demon continued eating and eating. Therefore, he asked again, "Mom, what are you eating? I also want to eat." The devil answered, "You can't eat. The children cannot eat. If the child eats, that is not good for your teeth. So you can't consume it." Therefore, he was listening to it. When he rubbed gently to look for his brother, he could not find him. He thought, "That is not alright. The demon Hpulum Htu ate my brother." He was so scared and said to the demon, "Mother, I want to pass the motion. I need to poo so that I will go out." The monster said, "No, you can't go out." "If you want to empty your bowels, you sit near the doorway." So, the child said, "Mom, I don't want to do it there." Then the demon told him, "If so, do it at the end of steps." "I don't want to pass it at the root of the ladder," he replied. Thus the demon said, "Alright, Find a yarn. Where is the yarn? Find it and also the needle." The child found the yarn and needle and gave them to Hpulum Htu. The demon Hpulum Htu put the thread into the needle and gave him, "Pull it with you and raise the needle where you sit." The boy went together with the thread and the needle. He placed that needle at the end of the handle where they husked paddy by pounding in the booth. There was a bush tree near their booth. The elder child climbed up the fruit tree and was afraid. He did not return his mother's calls, but the needle replied, "Oh." Whenever the spirit called him, "My child," and only the needle answered, "Oh." After three times calling, Hpulum Htu said, "Come back faster." But the boy did not go back. So the spirit followed him and saw the needle at the paddy mortar. She knew the boy was not there and she looked for him everywhere around that place. That night, the moon was shining brightly. The moonlight was extremely bright, and the demon was searching for him. As the wind was blowing, the fruit tree was swaying left and right. The shadow was also swaying left and right. When the boy saw the spirit caught the shadow forcibly, he wanted to laugh and was frightened as well. Then he chuckled a bit. She heard that and looked up then she found the boy on the tree. "My Child, you are up there. Come down quickly." said the boy. The boy had no way out and said this, "Mother, do you want to eat fruits? I climb up to pick and eat them. If you want to eat, I will pluck for you. Would you please bring the spear where the father put the knives and spears? I will poke the fruits with that and give them to you." Hpulum Htu really went back home and took the spear from the rack above the fireplace. When the boy got the spear, he prodded the fruit and asked her, "Mom, I will put the fruit into your mouth. Open your mouth." When the demon opened her mouth, the boy pierced with the spear and killed her. The boy could escape from that.
