Description: Translation (Rita Seng Mai) This is about the promise between the hunter and the big snake. The hunter was walking along the street. At that moment, the snake was in the middle of the street, blocking the way. He was afraid to kill it. He said, "Big snake, can you move out of my way?" The snake said, "Can you promise me one thing? I will bless you with a long life and good health." He said, "Okay. Bless me. I won't kill you. I will not shoot you, too." The snake said to the man, "Don't tell anyone you met me here. Don't tell anyone, not even your wife, about the blessing I have given you." The hunter said to the snake, "You can eat whatever you want here. Just eat anything you want. I have caught many different kinds of animals before." (In the past, we caught animals such as elephants and tigers. These days, tigers are expensive. Even snakes are getting expensive.) Then the snake said, "I will give you my blessing. You will catch lots of animals when you go hunting. You will get lots of money. Don't tell anyone about this. Also, don't tell anyone that you met me." After the snake blessed the man, it said to him, "Bless me too." He said, "Live in the deep water where there is much gold, and become a dragon. Live somewhere where there is much gold. May you become a dragon." As the man said, the snake could live in the deep water where there was much gold. It didn't need to search for food in the forest. The snake said to the man, "I wish you success in whatever you do. You will gain great profit in your business. Even if you catch fish for a living, I will help you. However, don窶冲 tell anyone, not even your wife, that you met me. Don't tell anyone how much you earn, either." The man was successful in whatever he did and earned a lot of money. Then his wife said to him, "How can we earn so much money while others are failing in business these days?" He said to her, "Don't tell anyone. I once met a huge snake, and we gave blessings to each other." Right after he told his secret to his wife, all his luck disappeared. The snake couldn't become a dragon, too. Then the snake knew immediately that the man had betrayed it. The man had no success in life. In the past, when we built a substation, some Burmese engineers and I worked together. We measured the length of the street to build the posts. Three Burmese engineers and I walked along the street. We encountered a big snake on our way. I was going to kill the snake. They stopped me and said, "Don't kill it, please." Soon, the snake disappeared. At night, I asked them, "Why did you stop me? Why didn't you let me kill the snake? We, the Jinghpaw people, kill snakes whenever we see them." They said, "They give us money. Don't kill them." Then they told me this story. They said, "We need to keep our promise. When a snake comes to attack you, just make it a promise you can keep. It will keep its word. We also need to keep our word."
