Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) There was once a king who had a beautiful daughter. He wanted to find the best partner for his daughter. The princess told the king, "My lord, let me choose my consort. I want to marry the man I love." The king accepted what his daughter said. The king said, "Yes, you can choose your consort because you are the one who will have to live with him till the end of your life." The princess hit the gong and announced that she would choose her consort. But she didn't say how the men had to compete. So, the guards told everyone in the country to stay at home. There was an old woman and her son in the village too. They were very poor and lived in a small house. They couldn't even afford to roof. That night, the princess took her towel, which was slippery and planned to throw it at people's houses. The princess decided that she would marry a man from a home where her slippery towel was hooked. She threw it on every house's roof. The roofs of the wealthy families were made of zinc or iron. So, her slippery tower could not be hooked. It was almost morning, but she couldn't find her dream consort yet. At that time, she reached in front of the poor boy's house and threw her towel there. Since there were only posts, the towel was hooked there. The princess told her guards, "Knock the door." And she entered the house. The princess said to the poor boy, "I decided to marry the man from the house where my towel is hooked. I'll marry you." The poor boy did not know the girl was a princess. He agreed to marry her because she was a beautiful girl. They happily lived as a couple. One day, the king announced the whole country. The king invited people to compete in horse riding race and go hunting. The princess told her husband about it. "Ride my horse that I used to ride when I was young. Don't ride too far or too close to the king even though the king's horse is slow or fast. You ride together with him." He listened to his wife. In fact, the princess didn't live in the palace since she got married to the poor boy. She lived at her husband's old house. He prepared to go hunting with the king. The king rode the horse very fast. His guards could not follow him well. But the poor boy remembered what his wife said. So, he followed closely behind the king. The king stopped under a tree to take a nap. Since the king was a good storyteller, he told the boy a story. Nat spirits and birds came to listen to the king's story because it was very good. While he was telling a story, his guards arrived there. So, the king had to stop his story just in the middle. The king said, "I'll take some rest." The king didn't continue his story. Everyone was taking a nap under the tree, except the poor boy. At that time, nat spirits were discussing something. The poor boy heard what they were talking about. They said, "The king told us just half of the story. We are so upset. Let's put him into danger." They decided to curse the king to die. One evil nat spirit cursed, "May the tree fall onto the king on his way back home." Another evil nat spirit cursed, "If the king can pass that because of his luck, may he fall from the bridge." Another demon cursed, "If he passes that again, may he slip down from the ladder." Another demon cursed, "If he passes it successfully, may he jams himself in the door." The last demon cursed, "May a big snake bite him to death in his bed." The poor boy heard the demons' curses. He decided to save the king. But he didn't know the king was his father-in-law. Then, he quickly woke the king up. The king was shocked and woke up. At that time, the tree fell onto the place where the king was sleeping. The king escaped from death. They rode the horses and ran away from there. When they reached the bridge, he let the king cross first. As soon as they had crossed over it, the bridge had broken. They escaped from the second curse too. Then, they reached a ladder. The boy let the king climb first. Suddenly, the king fell from the ladder. But, the poor boy could catch the king and save his life. The king escaped again. Then, they continued their way back to the palace. They reached near the door. The boy quickly pushed the king into the palace before the door was closed. Only his cloth was stuck in the door. So, he took his cloth off right there. Then, the king was preparing to sit on his bed. The boy said, "My lord! Don't sit there yet!" The boy told the king to order the guards to check the bed first. When the guards checked the king's bed, they found a venomous snake. The boy said, "My king! The evil nat spirits cursed you when you were sleeping under the tree without continuing the story. I heard them, so I thought to save you. That's why I let you go before me." The king was angry at him at first because he pushed him hard. But the boy explained why he pushed the king. Then, the king was not mad at him anymore. The king asked him, "Whose husband are you?" The boy said, "I am the husband of the princess. When she threw a towel onto the houses' roof to find her consort, it was hooked on my house. So, I got married to her." The king finally knew that the poor boy was his son-in-law. The king said, "You are my son-in-law! You are very clever and smart. Plus, you save my life. I am going to give you my crown. You are the king of this country from this day." In the end, the poor boy became the king. Transcription (Lu Awng) Moi shawng de da hkawhkam wa gaw kasha langai lu ai da.
