Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) A long time ago, there was a foolish boy called Bautau. He was stupid and crazy. He didn't know how to work. He got married when he grew up. After few months, his wife said, "Bautau! The neighbour's husbands often hunt for their families, but you do not go hunting. Can you hunt the birds at least?" Then, he agreed to hunt. He made the strings to catch birds the whole night. The next day, he woke up early and went to catch the birds. The wife thought that her husband would be hungry when he came back from hunting. She worried and cooked for her husband. Bautau did not go to the jungle. He came out from home and went to the house's backyard. And he climbed on the rooftop. He set a trap there to catch the small birds who used to stay on the roof. He used his knees and legs as the trap instead of using the string he made last night. His wife was happy because she thought he went to the forest to catch birds. In the evening, the wife heard, "Almost caught." When she looked at the rooftop, she saw her husband was catching the small birds by using his knees and legs. She was depressed and said, "Bautau! I thought you were going to the jungle, but what are you doing there? Come down." The next day, he went to the jungle to hunt some animals. His wife went together with him. They set the trap in the forest near the king's palace. The next day, he went back there to check the trap and saw a deer got caught in his trap. He thought, "This is a small cow from the king's farm. I can get punishment." Then, he released the deer. When he tried to set the deer free from the trap, it was moving and shaking with all of its efforts because it was scared. He set it free and returned home. When he got home, he told his wife, "When I went to check there this morning, there was a calf caught in the trap. It is from the king's farm. You told me to set traps near the king's farm. So, I released it since it was shaking. Then, his wife said, "You are so stupid, Bautau. I've never seen a stupid like you. That is deer. If you caught that red deer again, beat and take it home." The next time, a monk was caught in his trap. The monk wore a red robe. But Bautau didn't know that he could be a monk. As his wife said he had to beat if he caught red things in his trap, he beat him many times and took him to his home. The wife said, "How stupid you are, Bautau! He is a monk, not a deer. We have to worship him. Release him." So, Bautau released the monk. One day later, Bautau went hunting. This time, he got a deer again. He remembered what his wife said to him. So, he worshipped it. When he got near it, it kept moving. Then, the deer escaped. He returned home and told his wife about that. She said, "You should have killed it. That is meat." The next day, he got a deer and killed it. Then, he took it to his home. The wife told him to share the meat with the relatives. Sharing the meat was a traditional culture (numju). She cut the meat and put them in the basket. And she said, "Give the meat to my father. You can share some meat with the relatives and neighbours." Then, he went to his wife's native village by carrying the basket. His wife also told him, "Share the meat with everyone who asks for it because it is your first time caught a deer." He carried the basket and went there. He went there through the forest. When the leaves touched him, he thought they asked for meat and threw it to them. His wife also told him that his father-in-law had a long moustache and lived at a house near the village's entry. He kept going and saw a small lake on his way. The frogs were croaking in the lake. The stupid Bautau thought that the frogs were asking for the meat. So, he threw a piece of meat into the lake. At that time, the frogs stopped croaking for a while. He thought, "It will be enough for them." And he carried the basket and prepared to continue his way to father-in-law's house. At that time, the frogs were croaking again. Then, he threw another piece of meat into the lake. The frogs were silent as soon as he threw it. He thought, "They will be full now." Then, he lifted his basket and tried to continue his way. But the frogs were croaking again. So, he gave them another meat. He almost gave all of the meat to them. At last, he set forth and reached the village's entry. There, he saw a goat with a long moustache. He thought, "My wife said her father had a long moustache. It might be him." So, he went near the goat to give meat. It seems he had never seen his father-in-law. When he went nearer the goat, it was afraid of him and kept running away. He chased after it and hooked the pack of meat on its horn. Then he went back home. He told his wife, "Oh, I hardly gave the meat to your father. The more I spoke to him, the more he ran away from me." The wife did not know anything and said, "It's okay if you have given it. You will get blessings because of sharing the first meat you could catch with relatives. Let's farm this year. We do not have any children too. We just need to clear the farm. It will be enough for us even if we grow only a handful of rice." It seems the wife was wise. But the stupid Bautau had no idea. 'A handful of rice plants' stuck in his mind. So, he measured the farm with his palm and cleared only that part. His wife asked him, "Did you check the farm where we can grow?" He answered, "Don't say that. I even cleaned it." She said, "I don't believe you. How did you clear it?" He answered, "You said we only need to clear about a hand. But I cleared more." The next day, they went to check the farm. The wife asked him, "Where is your farm?" He replied, "It's over there, in the forest." She saw that he really cleared only this much, for about a palm. She told him to clear more. When they needed to grow rice plants, the wife said, "Only we will work. So, build a hut as big as a crab's shell." Actually, she used a metaphor to mention the hut. But, Bautau didn't know what his wife meant. SO, he went to the river bank to search for the crab's shell. When he found it, he put it on the fallen tree. Then, he told his wife that he finished building the hut. The wife doubted how he built the hut. She went there to check. They also bred a dog. When the dog walked in front of them, Bautau shouted, "Hey dog! Don't eat my house." The wife asked him, "A dog can eat the house? Where is your house?" Then, the wife saw that it was only the crab's shell. She got outraged. One day, she told him, "The neighbours are doing 'dinghku tsip tsip' (family business). We should also do that." What she wanted to mean was to lead a family business. The next day, she went to the farm. Bautau stayed at home. He remembered what his wife said. So, he brought weeds and grass into the house. (Tsip means nest in Jinghpaw language.) In the evening, the wife went home tired. When she got into the house, she saw weeds and grass. She asked him, "What are these? Why did you put these?" Bautau said, "You told me that you wanted to be 'dinghku tsip tsip' (tsip means nest). So, I put these in our house." He didn't get the point of what his wife really wanted to mean. A few years later, they got a baby. When the wife had some work to do, Bautau looked after the baby. She said, "You don't know how to do farming. So, I will go to the farm, and you care for the baby." A moment later, the baby was crying because he was hungry. Bautau hugged the baby and had no idea why the baby was crying. He saw the baby's fontanelle was moving. So, he thought his son was crying because of that. Then, he pierced the fontanelle.So, the baby died. So, the baby died. Bautau thought the baby fell asleep. When his wife came back home, she looked for her baby because she didn't hear the child's crying. So, she asked him, "Where is the baby?" Bautau said, "You did not care for the baby well. The baby is sleeping there. The baby hurt because of a boil on his head. So, I pierced it". His wife was shocked and quickly checked the baby. But the baby was dead. She was fuming and sorrowful. In the evening, she told her husband to pound the paddies. She said, "Bautau! Pound the paddies as much as that big tree." But he didn't understand what she meant. Then, he climbed the tall tree by carrying paddies to pound. Unfortunately, he fell from the tree and died. He even lost his life because of his stupidity.
