Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) The story I'm going to tell is about an orphan boy. Once upon a time, there lived an old grandmother and her grandson in a village. His parents died since he was a baby. He grew up with his grandmother. One day, the king ordered the villagers to build a road. Then, the rich's children said, "One person from each house needs to work in building a new road!" So, the orphan boy had to work too. While he was cutting the trees down in the forest to build a new road, he found a magnificent ruby. He picked it up and hid it under his cloth. He pretended as he had a stomachache. The other boys saw him and scolded, "Hey! What are you doing without working? Stand up and work now!" He said, "I can't stand up because my stomach really hurts. Can you tell my grandmother to bring some medicine and a dried bottle gourd filled with water?" So, they went to his grandmother and said, "Your grandson has stomach pain while he was working. He couldn't even stand up. He said to bring a dried bottle gourd filled with water and some medicine." The grandmother thought it was real. So, she took them to him and quickly went there. When she reached him there, he was lying down like a shrimp. She asked him, "Do you hurt a lot?" He said, "Shhhh! Grandma, come quickly. I've found a priceless ruby. Put it in the gourd and keep it safe at home." Then, she took it in the gourd and went back home. The next day, they went to another village to sell the ruby. They had to go there by boat. They put the dried bottle gourd with the ruby in a bamboo bottle. No one thought they would have a priceless ruby. They saw the grandmother and her grandson carrying only a bamboo bottle. When they reached there, they stopped on the riverbank and sat on it. While they were standing there, people asked them, "What are you doing there?" The grandmother said, "I am a visitor. But I don't know where to visit. I want to visit a wealthy family's house." People said, "Okay. We will take you to the richest man's house in our village." The grandmother took the dried bottle gourd from the bamboo bottle and followed them. The rich family welcomed and treated her well. The rich man asked her, "Why are you coming here, grandmother?" She said, "I have something really valuable." He asked her, "What's that?" She asked him again without answering, "Is there anyone who can afford to buy that thing?" The man asked, "What's in your bottle gourd?" The grandmother said, "This is my medicine. Take a quick look." When the man looked inside it, the red light shining brightly came out. It was like fire. Then, he closed the dried bottle gourd and said, "Oh, this is a priceless gem. We should show this to the king and the wealthy men in this country." They showed the ruby to the wealthy men. They asked the grandmother, "How much do you want for this precious ruby?" She didn't know how much it was worth. So, she just scratched her head without knowing what to say. And she had thick and dense hair. Then, they thought, "She wants the amount of money as much as her hair." They said, "Take the money as much as you can." The grandmother and her grandson took an incredible amount of money and went back to their village. When they got back, the rich's sons from their village asked the orphan boy, "How did you become rich? Where did you get that money?" He answered, "I put the fermented and intoxicating rice into bamboo bottles and sold them at the other villages. Then, I've earned a lot of money." They wanted to get a lot of money like the orphan boy, so they prepared lots of fermented rice and went to that village to sell those. But no one bought that fermented rice from them. They knew the orphan boy lied to them and were angry at him. They decided to punish him. The orphan boy begged them, "Don't kill me, please. Put me in a basket and hang it on the tree beside the river." Then, they didn't kill him and hung him there. And they went back to their house. At that time, a herdsman came near that tree with many buffaloes and cows. He had bad eyesight. He saw the orphan boy in a basket hanging on the tree. So, he asked, "Hey! What are you doing there?" The orphan boy said, "Oh, I am curing my eyes because I have poor eyesight. I am a bit unhealthy too. So, I am curing myself with the steam of water from this river." The herdsman said, "Oh, really? I want to cure my eyes too." The orphan boy said, "It's good. Please, help me climb down." The herdsman helped him climb down from the tree. He said to the orphan boy, "I want to cure my eyes too." The orphan boy said, "Then sit inside this basket. I will hang you on the tree. Your eyesight will be good soon." He lied to the herdsman. While the herdsman was sitting in the basket hanging on the branch, the orphan boy cut the rope down. Then, the herdsman fell into the water and died. Then, the orphan boy took all the buffaloes and cows and went back to the village. While he was driving the cows and buffaloes to his home, the rich's sons saw him and asked, "Where did you get those buffaloes and cows?" He answered, "When you hung me on the tree, I fell down into the water. There, I saw many buffaloes and cows in the middle of the river. Then, I take them home." Then, they told the king and other villagers about that. The king thought it was real and said to the villagers, "Let's go and sit in the baskets! And we will be hung there." They all sat in each basket and hung themselves on the trees. Then, the orphan boy asked them, "Are you ready? You need to hold knives too. I will count 1,2,3, then cut the rope, okay? Then, you will see lots of animals in the middle of the river. You just need to take them." They said, "We are ready!" Then, the orphan boy counted, "1, 2, 3!"
