Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) A long time ago, there was a poor mother and her son in a village. She had an only son. They were so poor. The mother washed other people's clothes for a living. She earned a living by working as a washerwoman. She used the extra money she earned to support her son's education. She worked for many years until her son grew up and became an adult. One day, a king who ruled their village announced that there would be a test and anyone could come and take it. He said that whoever passed the test would be appointed as his royal advisor. He made an announcement to the villagers. The poor boy heard it and told his mother, "Mom, there is going to be a royal test. Whoever passes it will become the king's closest advisor. I want to take that test, Mom." The mother said, "Oh. But I have sent you to school and have raised you until now, even while being poor. You have grown so much. If you go to the palace and become close with the king, you will forget me." The son said, "I will never forget you, Mom. I'll always remember all you've done for me. I won't ever forget it." Then she said, "Okay. Go take the test whether you pass or fail." Then the boy really took the test and passed it. He was chosen to be the advisor and stay closely with the king. He lived with the king in the palace. He didn't go back to see his mother even after four or five years. He never sent any messages to his mother. His mother heard his news. One day, she bought some gifts and went there to see her son because she missed him so much. When she arrived near the palace, she asked the people there, "The person who works closely with the king is my son. I'm his mother, and he's my only child. I want to meet him." They said, "Wait here. We will show you. He will come out of the palace in the evening." In the evening, her son, the king and the servants really came out of the palace. She told other people that he was her son. She said to her son, "My son, I want to see you so much, so I came here. I also bring this gift. As you can't come to see me, I come to see you." The son felt embarrassed and didn't want others to know about his mother because she was ugly and a highlander. So he said, "Whose mother are you? I don't know you. I haven't met you too." The water submerged the entire village. All the villagers were dead. Only she and her son survived. They happened to stay near the palace. While they were there, everything was in complete darkness and there was no light at all. They didn't know how many days and nights would remain in darkness. Then the king wanted to have days and nights as before. He said, "It is not okay to have only darkness! Who can bring back the light? Go find someone who can!" Then the mother and her son heard about the king's announcement. She told her son, "I can bring back the light. Take this ring and pray at the temple. Then we will get the light back." Then her son went to the palace and said, "If I can go the temple and pray there, we will get the daylight back. Allow me to go to the temple, please." He wore the ring and entered the temple inside the palace. And he prayed there. When he came out of the temple, daylight had already returned. It was bright. The king was delighted, so he let the boy and his mother live peacefully in the palace. They lived happily in the palace, enjoying delicious food, wearing fine clothes, and having plenty of money.
