Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) Once upon a time, there was an old couple who cast fish for their living. They didn't have any children. They were a fisherman and a fisherwoman. But they didn't want to catch fish anymore. Sometimes, they were downhearted. So, they had a serious discussion, "What shall we do if we don't catch fish anymore?" But they didn't have any choice. So, they had to catch fish and sell those fish. They went to the river every day, sat under the tree near the river and tried to cast some fish. One day, they got a beautiful fish. After getting that fish, they didn't get any fish anymore the whole day. They were sad at the thought, "We couldn't catch any fish today. What shall we eat today?" They got only that fish although it was getting dark. Surprisingly, the fish talked to them in a sad voice. It said, "Don't kill me, please." But the old woman said, "If we don't kill you and sell you, we won't have anything to eat. So, we must kill you." The fish kept asking for mercy. It appealed to them, "Don't kill me, please." The man felt pity, so he said, "Okay. Let's make a promise between us. Then, we won't kill you." It said, "Okay." Then, it gave a piece of wood to them. His wife looked at that wood and said, "What should we do with that piece of wood?" It said, "This wood is really important. Say anything you want to this piece of wood. It will fulfill your wish." Then, she asked, "What if it doesn't fulfill our wishes?" The fish said, "No, your wishes will definitely become." The couple let the fish go and just took the piece of wood that it gave to them. When they arrived home at night, she said, "My husband, you let the fish go and took only this useless wood. What shall we do now?" The man said, "Let's do the same as the fish says." He held it and said, "We want to eat a delicious meal tonight." Then, tasty dishes appeared on their table. His wife was happy to see those dishes. They ate the dishes happily. As women are greedy, this old woman wanted to get more and more too. So, they asked for a big new house. They wanted to own a lot of money and pieces of jewellery too. So, they asked the piece of wood to give them. They became richer day after day. But the woman couldn't be satisfied with all those money and belongings. She told her husband, "We have money now, so we just need to be a king and a queen now. Let's wish to become a king and a queen." Then, he said, "Yes, I want to be a king too." They held the wood tight and said, "Let us be a king and a queen of a big country." They really became the king and the queen as they wished, but the woman wasn't satisfied. The woman told her husband, "Now, we have become the rulers of the country. Shall we make a wish to be the person who can fulfill other people's wishes and have supernatural power?" He told her, "We have got whatever we want and can live happily without any worries. Let's not wish that one." But she said, "No, I will ask it." One day, the old man took that piece of wood and went to the river where they used to catch fish. And he said, "The little fish, my wife wants to be a god." The fish appeared in front of him and said, "You two have got anything you want now. But you two are so greedy and want more and more. So, you will be the fisherman and fisherwoman again. You need to catch fish again. You will have to stay there poorly again." Sooner and later, they lost their jewellery and money. They had to catch fish again for their living. "Being greedy is not good for the individual. It is bad for other people too." Transcription (La Ring) Shawng de da shani shagu nga sha dawn nna dut sha sha re ai dinggai hte dingla nga ai da.
