Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) The story I'm going to tell you is how banana plants and fruits started existing on this earth. Once upon a time, there lived a widow and her child in a village. They were poor. The daughter of the widow was in love with a man from the other village. They wanted to get married, but the man's parents didn't give their blessings upon them. Then, the man lived with the girl and her widow mother. The man worked as a woodcutter. He had to climb many mountains to cut down the trees. One evening, it was raining heavily while he was about to go back home after cutting some trees down. Unfortunately, he was dead since the tree fell over him on his way back home. His wife was left pregnant. After a few months, she gave birth to a baby girl. Unfortunately, the baby girl turned blind when she was only two months old. But the mother didn't know about it. She thought her baby was sleeping, so she put her baby on a wooden bedstead while she was cooking. There was a high mountain near their village. It was so high that even men couldn't climb it. The mother put her two-month-old baby on a bamboo bedstead at the base of that high mountain. At that time, an eagle was flying towards the baby. It carried the baby with its beak. No one saw the baby was being taken by the eagle. Then, the mother who was doing the work remembered her baby and murmured, "My baby must be awake." And she turned back and looked at her baby. But there was no baby. She was shocked and looked around the place. Then, she saw the baby in the eagle's beak at the top of the mountain. She was shouting, "Help! Help! My baby is being taken by the eagle! I need to get my baby back." Some people heard her and said, "Oh lady, you can't get your baby. No man can climb this mountain." She was desperate and said, "I have to save my baby. His father is dead too. I have only him. Whenever I feel miserable, my baby is my only companion." The villagers told her, "There is no way you can save your baby. Even the men can't climb this mountain since it is too steep and high." She was crying hard and decided to save her baby from the eagle. So, she started climbing the mountain. The villagers felt pity for her and murmured, "This woman will die after falling down from this mountain. Her baby is eaten by the eagle. Such a pitiful mother and baby!" But the woman thought to herself, "It's okay for me even if I die. I only want my baby to be alive." She tried hard and kept climbing the mountain. She kept climbing and climbing it. She made it to get to the top of the mountain in the end. When she got to its top, the eagle was about to eat her baby. She threw a stone towards the eagle. Then, it was frightened and flew away. She quickly picked her baby up. She was scared when she thought of climbing down the mountain because it was too dangerous. But she knew that both of them would die if they stayed on the mountain. So, she tried to climb down. The villagers witnessed everything and praised her. They threw a rope at her and shouted, "Grab this rope! Use it and climb down." She used the rope and climbed down while holding her baby. Unfortunately, she failed to hold the rope in the middle and both of them fell from the mountain. The baby girl was successfully caught by the villagers. So, she was alive. But her mother died. The baby girl was raised by her grandmother. A few years later, she became a grown-up girl and very beautiful. Many boys in the village loved her and tried hard to get her love. But she didn't like anyone back. Then, the boys told her, "You are going to be a spinster." The girl smiled and replied politely, "It's okay." She spent her days just taking care of her grandmother and collecting woods from the forest. She usually went to the forest and searched for some fruits and woods for them. Her grandmother became blind when she was getting older. So, the girl went into the forest by herself. She always took a basket to put the woods and some food to eat whenever she went into the forest. One day, while she was collecting some woods, she noticed that a boy who was sitting on a tree was looking at her. She was scared, but she acted like she was not afraid. She did all of her work as usual and went back home. After three days, the boy searched lots of woods and gave them to her. But he didn't talk to her. He didn't do any harm to her. The girl fed him some food since he helped her collect the woods. One day, she thought, "This boy helps me a lot. He is so nice to me. I will cook a delicious curry for him and show my gratitude to him." She told her grandmother about him and cooked a delicious chicken curry for him. After that, she wrapped it up and went into the forest. When she arrived there, she saw the boy and told him, "I am really thankful to you because you helped me collect woods. So, I cook this delicious chicken curry for you." He finally made a sound and said, "I don't eat meat. I can't! I only eat vegetables." She wanted to know why he didn't eat meat, so she asked him, "Why don't you eat meat?" He replied, "The reason why I live in this forest is to look after all the villagers who live at the mountain base one day." The girl didn't understand what he was talking about. She was falling for him since he helped her a lot. He loved her too, but he tried not to confess his love. He said, "I can't love you. I have collected lots of wood for you today. I will go back now." She asked him, "Where are you going back? Can you tell me?" He said, "I am sorry, I can't. I have to go back now. They are calling me." She begged him not to go and said, "There are many boys and men who like me. But I don't love them back. I love only you." And she grabbed his hand. But the boy determined to go back. Then, she quickly put all of her things on the ground and tried to hold his hand. She didn't let him go. She firmly held his hand and begged him, "Don't go, please. Let's live with me forever." He said, "I can't. I have to go back." But she insisted on holding his hand. Unluckily, the boy's hand was broken. His arm was not attached to the body since the girl pulled his hand hard. The boy ran away and disappeared. The girl held his broken hand tight. Human hands become rotten a few days after they are not attached to the body. The girl felt attached to the boy and didn't want to bury the hand. So, she dug a hole in the ground and put the boy's hand upside down. She put the elbow into the ground and put the fingers up. A few months later, there grew a banana plant at that place. The plant was like a human's hand. The leaves were growing like a human's palm. And the fruits looked like fingers. The banana plant started growing when the girl put the boy's hand into the ground. Then, banana plants start existing on the earth.
