Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) I would like to tell you about the Naga people who lived in Namyang Pangsau. It is about how they offer human sacrifices to the spirits. This is history. In the past, the Naga people didn't know how to cultivate grains and yams. They approached the Kachin chiefs and asked for grain. The Kachin chiefs lied to them and gave the steamed grain to grow. When the Naga people grew those grains, they weren't successful. Then, they went to the Kachin chiefs and asked for the grain again. The Kachin chiefs steamed and dried the grain this time. And they gave them to the Naga people. The grains didn't grow at all. Then, the Naga people went to the Kachin people again and asked for grain. The Kachin people said, "You have to offer sacrifices to the spirits. You need to offer young people as offerings to them, then the rice grain will grow." The Kachin people gave them good rice grain this time. The Naga people went back and sacrificed young people to the spirits. And they grew rice. The rice really grew well. They could eat enough rice. Since then, they had habitually offered young people to nats whenever they grew rice and other grains. We have learned that there was a habit of sacrificing at that time. Around 1960, the Naga people tried to kill the Kachin people wherever they met them because they thought, "These Kachin people did bad things to us! They made us kill young people and sacrifice them to the spirits." They were resentful. Around 1960, when Mr Kumje Tawng was a leader, he and other gentlemen from KBC went to Naga land and asked for peace. I have heard about it before. We have learned that the Naga people sacrificed their young people to the spirits in the past, and it was all because of the Kachin people. The Kachin people were mean at that time. Now, the Naga people are Christians. They never kill people and offer them as offerings now. The Naga people did those bad things in the past because of the Kachin people. I am just letting you know about this history.
