Description:Translation (Seng Pan) This is about a red spot that appears beside the moon. Once upon a time, there lived two daughters and their mother in a village. One day, the mother went to her shifting field in a forest as she needed to feed the three daughters. When it got dark, the mother was chased by a Sanam Num (it's a traditional wild creature- between human and evil spirit). The mother's soul was taken and eaten by her. Because of it, the mother was dead there. And, the body was possessed by Sanam Num. She pretended like the woman and went back to the house. Since the mother didn't come back even when it got dark, they closed the doors and stayed inside the house. They longed for their mother. They were so scared but still waited for their mother to come back home. At that time, Sanam Num arrived at their house and shouted, "Dears. Mom is here. Open the door!" "Our mother will not come back this late. It seems you are not our mother," the two daughters replied. "Yes, I am your mother, dears," Sanam Num said. "Ok then. Show us your arm through a hole on this wall," a daughter asked. Then, Sanam Num inserted her arm in a hole. The daughters saw a hairy arm. The second daughter was not so smart. So, she said, "Sister. I think it's Mom. Open the door!" On the other hand, the eldest daughter was intelligent. She knew from the beginning that the woman was not their mother and the woman had a hairy arm. "Dears. I am your Mom. Since I worked the whole day, I've got some hair on my arm," Sanam Num insisted. But the elder sister didn't open the door. So, Sanam Num cleared all hair on her arm, and showed them again. Meanwhile, the elder sister moved some tables and blocked the door. She thought that would give them some protection. As soon as she turned her back, her younger sister opened the door. So, Sanam Num entered the house. Suddenly, the elder sister didn't know what to do. So, she prepared a male and let Sanam Num join with them. Sanam Num didn't want the smart daughter since she knew that she couldn't trick her. "Take a bottle each and fetch some water. The one who fetches the clear water won't be allowed to sleep with me. But I will sleep with the one who doesn't fetch the clear water," Sanam Num said. Although how many times the elder sister fetched the water, it was clear. However, the water that the younger sister fetched, turned brown. The younger sister tried many times. But the water she fetched was not clear every time. They couldn't think of any ideas. So, they just walked back home. That night, Sanam Num called the younger sister and planned to sleep together. The elder sister moved her bed near them and prepared to sleep together. When Sanam Num saw her, she said, "You can't sleep here. Go upstairs and sleep there. There is also a bed. Your sister and I are going to sleep here." As the younger sister was a bit stupid, she didn't insist on anything. So, the elder sister had to go upstairs to sleep. At midnight, a weird noise, "Kwat Krat Kawt Krat," came out. It was the chewing sound from Sanam Num eating her younger sister. At that time, the elder sister shouted from upstairs, "Sister. What is happening there? Mom. Are you there?" "It's alright, dear. Nothing happens. Since I worked the whole day, my back is so painful. And I am just stretching a bit. That's why it makes a bit noise," Sanam Num replied. The next morning, the younger sister's bones were wrapped with a blanket. When Sanam Num got up, she said, "Today, you prepare the meal. It seems your sister didn't sleep well last night because of me. She is still in bed." The elder sister realized that her reason was impossible since she was an evil spirit. And she didn't trust her word. Therefore, she decided to wake her sister up. However, Sanam Num didn't let her see the sister. She deceived her in many ways. Since Sanam Num had eaten a human, she was so full. And she wanted to go to the toilet. "Dear. I really want to use the toilet. Where is it?" Sanam Num asked. "Go to the valley. Don't go up the hill. When the father was alive, we used to dance Manau there. So, don't go there," the elder sister said. When Sanam Num turned her back, the elder sister pushed her. And she rolled down to the valley. And the girl went back to the house. Then she planned to go and check her younger sister. When she uncovered the blanket, she saw the bones. She was so shocked that what she had been thinking was true. And she was scared that Sanam Num would come back and eat her at night. At that time, non-living things like houses and spoons could communicate with humans. So, the girl said, "If Sanam Num comes and calls my name, please reply to her." And she ran away. Sanam Num arrived at the house and called, "My dear!" The spoon replied, "Yes, Mom." Sanam Num grabbed the spoon and destroyed it. After that, she called again, "My Dear." "Yes, Mom," a thing replied. Sanam Num broke all the things inside the house and called again. She looked for the girl in every corner. The girl was so afraid of the evil spirit and ran non-stop. She ran to the east of the village. There was a big tree. When she got there, she climbed the tree. She got at the top. Sanam Num chased after and looked for her. She followed the girl's smell. When Sanam Num arrived near the tree, she got a strong smell of the girl and assumed that the girl was around. But she didn't find her. As Sanam Num couldn't hold the figure of human, she transformed into her own appearance. The girl could see all the actions of Sanam Num who was looking for her like a fool. Since the girl couldn't hold her laughter, she finally chuckled. Sanam Num also found her at last. So, she tried to climb up the tree. Fortunately, it was a thorn tree. Therefore, Sanam Num couldn't climb up fast. The girl suddenly got an idea and said, "Mom. Don't come to me. It's dangerous. It fruits a lot. I will pick some for you. So, you go back home, and heat a sword till it turns red." The girl could calm Sanam Num down by giving a promise that she would come back home with some fruit. Sanam Num also agreed and got down from the tree. She took a sword and heated it. When it turned red, she gave it to the girl. "Mom. I will drop some fruit to your mouth from here. So, open your mouth wide!" the girl said. Sanam Num also did the same as the girl said. Instead of dropping fruit, the girl dropped the heated sword. It was gone through Sanam Num's body. Soon, the blood came out from her stomach a little by little. After a while, the blood covered the whole place. It became a blood flood and rose so fast. The girl was afraid that the blood would reach her soon. So, she called the sun. "Grandma, Grandma! Sanam Num is dead. Her blood is going to cover me up soon. Please come and suck this blood," the girl begged the sun. "I couldn't finish all," the sun replied. And the sun let her call her grandfather, the moon. Then the girl said, "Grandpa! The blood is rising rapidly. Please come and suck the blood!" The moon came down to the earth and sucked the blood. After a moment, the moon finished all the blood and even the soil got dry. Although all the fears that the girl faced were disappeared, she didn't know where to go. Her mother and sister were killed. Their house was already destroyed by Sanam Num. The girl was in deep sorrow. Then, the moon said, "Dear. Don't worry. Come with me! Let's go to my place." Finally, the girl was brought to the moon. Therefore, when we look at the sky at night, we a rest spot near the moon. The one who is pounding is the grandfather. And the girl is beside him.
