Description:Translation (Htoi San) I am telling a story about how the Kachin people found musical instruments. A long time ago, a girl fell in love with a boy, and they met at a clump of bamboo trees every night to pass their love life. They did not know how to start talking, although they met to see each other. Therefore the boy slashed, broke, and rapped the bamboo trees with his knife. The couple typically met and talked among the bamboo trees at midnight. The couple did not talk much to each other, but they cut and beat the bamboo trees. Thus the beating bamboo sound came out beautifully and sweetly. They said, "Oh dear! These bamboos can produce such a beautiful sound." Then they beat the bamboo trees every night to hear the music. When they cut the bamboo and heard the music, they said, "Oh my, this kind of sound can come out from the bamboo." "This bamboo can make such a beautiful sound," then they cut the bamboo and brought it home. Then they put the bamboo piece into a pillow. The music came from beating and knocking the bamboo in the forest at midnight when the couple met each other, and the sound from the bamboo under the pillow was not the same. The lovers were amazed, "How come? It was such a beautiful sound when we beat it in the jungle at night." "The sound came out nicely when we held, touched, knocked, and cut it. Why does it happen? What is wrong with it?" They were surprised about it. When the older adult came to their house, and they touched the bamboo piece, the baby crying sound, people jumping and falling into the abyss sound, and the scary sound came out from the bamboo piece. The bamboo produced a sound differently when they brought it home. They asked the gentleman from their village, "When we went into the forest, we touched with the knife and cut the bamboo." "When we beat the bamboo, the sound came out sweetly. But when we got home, only the frightening sound came out." The elderly village man answered, "If it happens like that, something might be wrong with you." However, the couple denied it, "We didn't do anything wrong." The village man insisted, "There is definitely something wrong. If the time is after midnight," "these are the dragging sounds from groaning spirit ladies while passing there. During that time, those ladies went out." "When you get home, the bamboo doesn't make any sounds," "because you have done something inappropriate." After some time, the girl was pregnant by her boyfriend. The couple did an ill-suited thing while the groaning spirit ladies were passing. Therefore the spirit ladies were angry, and the bamboo sounds became moaning voices. "So we should not go out and chat outside at midnight." "We should not do unsuitable manners too." Musical instruments were made with bamboo in ancient times. People knew when they beat the bamboo, which made sounds, and they hit the tree log. People made musical instruments using wood logs, then cut, put diagonally, and bent them until they could turn into a drum. People also knew it produced beautiful sounds when they beat the drum. So people said that we should not even whistle during bedtime. We should not play the flute at night time. "We cannot do wrong things during that time." People play the flutes and whistle during day time only. The ancient people told us not to play musical instruments during nighttime.
