Contributor:Geoffrey Benjamin
Kacaŋ Kapɛs
Coverage:Malaysia
Date:1970-04-22
Description:Portion of a digitisation of a Batek music session recording made by Geoffrey Benjamin in 1970, at Pos Aring in Kelantan. This is an extract of the Batek Deq song Yãh 'tiger', as sung by Kacaŋ Kapɛs. The singers performed in traditional style with flattened out treebark on the ground. This was recorded during Benjamin's only Batek field trip, which took place before Kirk Endicott worked with the Batek. The remainder of the recording is yet to be found. This track was used by Benjamin in his 'Music-and-culture in the Malay World and beyond' keynote lecture in 2016, and is one of the tracks referred to in his Music and the cline of Malayness paper from 2004. No notes found in Benjamin's fieldwork notebooks about the recording, but notes from Benjamin's Batek fieldwork are found on pp.1824-1854 of Notebook 10.
