| Description: A straight tree which is 40–50 m tall. There are itchy hairs inside the bark, which may spread on people’s bodies causing a bad itch when they are cutting this tree. When a domestic animal has been wounded, people pound the bark and put it on the wound to prevent flies from laying eggs in it. When wild boars are wounded they look for this tree and bite and eat the bark to cure the wound. The wood is hard and is good building mate¬rial, because insects do not eat it. People use it for mak¬ing rice-mortars, and also for building common-houses and barns, but not for family houses, because the tree is a bad omen. Figurines of the lightning spirit (róoy cn¬tràas) are often made of this wood. Because of its itchy hairs, this tree is used for scaring away spirits (háa), and the leaves are used when driving out spirits (háa róoy) during a funeral (>máan). The berries are too hard to be eaten. In March and April, the tree is leafless, and in June and July, when the tree leafs out again, there are many black larvae (kɔ́ɔk trú) eating the young leaves. The soil around this tree is very good for growing vegetables and rice. | ||
