| Description: A 10–15 m tall tree with white bark. The young leaves are pink and the fruits are sweet and edible. It grows in places where there is clay – on the mountains or in the valleys – especially in limestone soil (pté klàaŋ púun). The soil around it is good for growing any kind of plant, especially rice. They often grow around stream pools where water buffalo go bathing. During the rainy sea¬son, treefrogs (òr) lay their eggs on the leaves of this tree. In May and June, when the new leaves grow out, a lot of scarab beetles (krnòon) come at night to eat the young leaves, and at night people light bamboo torches and go to catch these edible bugs. In October and No¬vember the fruits ripen and become black. Then many bulbuls (kró) are flying back and forth to eat the fruits. The wood is white and good for making cross¬bows, since it is difficult to break. Leaves from this tree are spread below the house when people sacrifice a water buffalo to the ancestor spirits (>tráak). | ||
