Khmu Name: tráañ
Description: A large grass which can grow almost anywhere in the fallows and fields. If there is too much of it, the soil becomes sour and not good for growing rice or other plants. Tiger grass belongs to the agricultural tradition. It is sacrificed to the crows when the rice is sown (ˀyák klʔàak). When people finish off the old year (pc’hóoc nɨ̀m), they offer pieces of yam (kwáay), cockscomb flowers (ràaŋ rɔ̀ɔn) and tiger grass to the ancestor spi¬rits. When people are weeding the rice fields (>hɛ́ɛl), they cut tiger grass shoots, roast them on the fire and eat with rice; they can also steam the buds and eat with rice. During the harvest (>hɔ́ɔt) people are not allowed to eat tiger grass. If they do, the ancestor spirits believe that the harvest is finished, and expect sacrifices. When there is none, the spirits may punish the living people. Tiger grass is also used for making torches (trɔ̀) used in ceremonies and when catching frogs or fish at night. The Lao, Mien and Chinese, but not the Kammu, make brooms from it.
Note: "Id" refers to the original ID of the dried plant specimen
