Description: There are two kinds, one (~ spɔ́ ‘giant bamboo sugar cane’) is white and larger than the other sort (~ yɨ̀m ‘red sugar cane’), which is very dark red, almost black. In some Kammu villages, people grow sugar cane in their gardens around the village. They are grown for own use or for barter. People cut the stems, press out the sap with rollers (ìit ~) and boil it in a cast iron kettle (mɔ́ɔ kháaŋ) until it becomes sugar (òm ~). People may also cut the stem, peel off the hard bark and chew on the stem.
