Description:Scientific Name: Miscanthus sinensis Common Name: eulalia grass Arkivcentrum Syd ID: 1969602
Khmu Name: plàaŋ [Tai loan]
Description: A large grass which is similar to tiger grass (tráañ), but smaller. The leaves are 30–50 cm long and very sharp. When people cut them, they must hold them very tightly, otherwise the leaves easily cut the fingers. Ticks (rmŋɛ̀ɛs) often stay on the flowers. Because of its sharp leaves, this grass is used for scaring away spirits (>háa), and it is used together with raspberry (pràac) bushes for driving away the accident spirit (>púuc). When this grass has flowers and the inside of its stem is red (~ màam ká ‘fish blood eulalia grass’), the flower stalks are used for making rings (kháal kmpóŋ) that people wear on their heads as decorations. Former¬ly, the ràaŋ plàaŋ flute was made from the flower stalks of this grass.
