Description:Scientific Name: Piper betle Common Name: betel pepper Arkivcentrum Syd ID: 2068025
Khmu Name: plùu
Description: 1. A 10–20 m long vine which must be planted near a tree that it can climb. The people in some Kammu vil-lages grow betel pepper in their gardens and in the val¬leys, for their own use, and also for barter or sale to other villages. 2. The leaf of the betel pepper vine. Three or four leaves are folded to make a pack (lɛ́ɛp). 10 packs are tied to¬gether with a bamboo strip to form a bundle (màt). Sometimes people steam and dry the leaves to preserve them for a long time. Both men and women chew betel from after the morn-ing meal until they go to bed. The betel leaves are chewed together with lime (púun), which makes people warm and makes their teeth strong, with Artocarpus (pntrìik) bark, which gives a red colour and makes people sali¬vate, with a piece of betel nut (plé pùum), with a small piece of tnhɨ́r bark to make it tasty, and with strong tobacco to prevent coughing. All of these are mixed together and chewed. The proportions must be exactly right: if there is too much lime, it burns the mouth, and if there is too little, it does not taste good. Betel leaves are good for preventing cough, but they make the lips dry. When people go hunting, they chew betel just before the ani¬mal comes, so as not to cough. If someone gets cold while fishing, he may chew betel to get warm. Betel leaves are also used in some ceremo¬nies and sacrifices. When people ask permission for marriage, they bring betel leaves as a gift to the wife-giving family.
