Description:Scientific Name: Maranta sp. Common Name: Unspecified Arkivcentrum Syd ID: 2073335
Khmu Name: lá trù khúul
Description: There are four varieties of this plant: ~ nám ‘big Maran¬ta’, ~ khúul ‘hairy Maranta’, ~ màr ‘snake Maranta’ and ~ trlə̀əy ‘loach Maranta’. Lá trù nám has 25–30 cm wide and 35–40 cm long leaves with 30–50 cm long stalks. It grows in river valleys and other moist places where the sun does not shine so much. The leaves are used for making roofs (prèey lá) of field-houses (sŋkár) or for wrapping things. Fish or other food can be roasted (kúup) in the leaves. The leaves and stems of ~ khúul are similar to those of ~ nám, but the leaves are thinner and have hairs. People do not build roofs with them because they are easily destroyed by rain. Lá trù màr is smaller than ~ nám, and has longer and thinner leaves, and ~ tr¬lə̀əy has spotted leaves. These plants are not used.
