Description:Scientific Name: Bauhinia variegata Common Name: orchid tree Arkivcentrum Syd ID: 1963779
Khmu Name: klpáaŋ
Description: A 5–6 m tall tree which grows in cool, wet places where the sun does not shine very much. The soil around it is the best soil for growing all kinds of plants, especially rice. The leaves look like hearts. It flowers when people are clearing the new fields. The flowers are white and pink and very beautiful. When the flowers fall down to the ground, barking-deer come to eat them. The wood is hard, but people use it only for making fences around fields, or for building temporary field-houses, since the trunks are not straight. In May to July people go to col¬lect the young leaves which are steamed and eaten with rice. The taste is bitter but good. Sometimes people make soup (sə́ŋ kɔ̀ɔŋ ~) from them: Fill a cooking pot with cold water and heat it. When the water boils, put the young leaves in the pot with green chillies and salt. Boil for 20–25 minutes.
Note: "Id" refers to the original ID of the dried plant specimen
