Title:An optional ingredient in your Iñupiaq sentence
Contributor (author):Berthelin, Signe Rix

Date://
Description:In North Slope Iñupiaq you can add small syllables to your word and change the meaning. Niq is one of the many syllables you can put into an Iñupiaq word to give its meaning a different nuance. Through example situations, this pamphlet gives a feeling of what niq means and how to use it. This pamphlet also gives a short introduction to the grammar of Iñupiaq. Grammar is a pattern for building words. When we learn a new language, it can be helpful to know some patterns just like a recipe can be helpful when we want to make a new dish. Knowledge about the Iñupiaq grammar can help you mix the language ingredients so that you can express your thoughts and feelings to another person in Iñupiaq. When you know little expressions like niq, you can flavor your sentence and make it express exactly what you want to say. Comments: The pamphlet is based on knowledge shared by: Lolly Hopson, Tuuqłak Diaz, Edna Ahgeak MacLean, Janie Snyder, Ronald Aniqsuaq Brower, Lucy Ahvaiyak Brower-Richards, Doris Hugo, Uumiñaq, Beverly Faye Aqaŋŋiq Hugo, Etta P. Fournier, Dick Weyiouanna, Fannie Akpik, Lawrence Kaplan and two anonymous. Also thanks to Ronald Aniqsuaq Brower and Lawrence Kaplan, and to Torben Rix, Paulina T. L. Sørensen, Morten Dahlback, Linn Herredsvela, Jacqueline Juncker and Isabella Juncker. See IN011B2011 for thesis. Citation: Norwegian University of Science and Technology. 2015
