Description:Ahtna Texts Recording In Copper Center, Alaska 1958. recording 31 Frederica de Laguna APSdigrec_1187 04-04 Martha Jackson "Spinster Song, a shaman's song belonging to Martha's mother's father's brother, i.e. Martha's 'grandfather.' Used in curing. (Martha used drum). - Andy Brown's potlatch song for his dead uncle, buried at Tonsina. His mother's brother's grave was close to the road, and there was a lot of noise of cars and trucks passing. As explained (8/16/58), the words mean: 'You died, and after that, they make me worry, because the people make a noise.' People were making a noise and having a good time, and nobody was (at the grave). (Martha used a drum.) - Tabooed Wolf Hunting Song, used by wolf who was old, to bring the moose to him. 'Turn around like this, and come to me.' The ground turned and brought the moose. It is a good luck song for hunting. - Martha's MoMoBro's Potlatch song for his dead brother. His brother killed himself with his gun. (Slow drum beat) - Martha's MomoBro's second song for his dead brother. The words of the song refer to the gun from Northway that 'spoiled' the singer's older brother. Martha used this song at the funeral potlatch for her son, Abraham, summer of 1957. The latter was killed in an automobile. - Martha Jackson's own Shaman song, composed when she was 35 years old. It is based on a dream about money. Martha's mother got another sleep doctor to remove her daughter's power, because her mother was afraid that Martha was 'too mean' and would 'die quick.'". Language as given:
