OLAC Working Group on Language Codes
This working group is now closed. Further discussion of language codes should be directed to the Metadata working group.
The OLAC Working Group on Language Codes will create OLAC standards concerning language code vocabularies and their management.
In scope are all human languages, living, recently extinct, ancient and constructed. Constructed languages include proto languages and artificial languages. Out of scope is the classification of languages into language families.
Note: This working group operates according to the OLAC Working Group Process.

|Description:||This document will identify the language code vocabularies to be used in OLAC-conformant metadata (including ISO-639, Ethnologue and LINGUIST codes), and lay out the rules for deciding which vocabulary to use for a given language, and the procedure to use when a putative language is not listed in any vocabulary.|
|Title:||LINGUIST Codes for Ancient and Constructed Languages|
|Description:||This document will define a vocabulary covering ancient and constructed languages. It will describe how the criteria for the Ethnologue codes can be modified and extended to ancient and constructed languages. It will also list the criteria by which codes should be assigned to ancient and constructed languages.|

|Title:||Ethnologue Codes for Living and Recently-Extinct Languages|
|Description:||This document will define the Ethnologue vocabulary for living and recently-extinct languages, and will document the process by which the vocabulary is managed and updated. The document will also specify a process for community members to request a new code, and the criteria that the Ethnologue editors apply in deciding whether to adopt the code.|

|Description:||This document will define the constitution of a group that will maintain the LINGUIST Language Codes over an extended period. The document will also specify a process for community members to request a new code, and the criteria that the group will use in deciding whether to adopt the code.|
