Description:Deaf and hearing children playing in the plant nursery of Child 5's parents.
This project was supported by the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme (ELDP) (funded by Arcadia). The project presents a unique effort to document the acquisition of a sign language in a deaf village over an extensive period of time. Kata Kolok is threatened by the increasing number of sign-bilinguals using Indonesian Sign Language in addition to Kata Kolok, as well as recent changes in marital patterns.
Deaf and hearing children playing in the plant nursery of Child 5's parents and at school.
This deaf girl's parents are originally from Bondaleng (a 30 minute drive from Bengkala). Although the child was born in Bengkala, she had never interacted with (deaf) signers before the start of the project. Her parents have agreed to send her to the inclusive deaf school in the village as of December 2011.
This family is originally from Bondaleng village, a 30 min motorbike ride from Bengkala. They do not know Kata Kolok.
