(Leiden 13-3-1886 - Zeist 15-11-1964) Studied Dutch language and literature in Leiden, Netherlands. Joined in on field research on culture and language of the Blackfoot Indians in the US in 1910. Was on a Dutch-Danish expedition in 1922/1923 to the islands of St. John and St. Thomas of the US Virgin Islands, where he collected the tales in Negerhollands in the first months of 1923. In the 1920s he was concerned with ethnography and ethnology of the peoples of Indonesia. He was known to attribute great importance to get acquainted as quickly as possible with the local languages of the people he encountered outside Europe.
