Description: | Recording took place during primary school hours (08:30 AM-03:30 PM) at a primary school in a separate classroom. Recording was done by Dorian de Haan (researcher) between 1984-1986. Recording took place in June. This is a broken conversation. This conversation is continued in DBD DH 039A.
Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch.
Dorian de Haan talks with two girls, Marjorie and Melita (Suriname Creole) about school (which subjects they like/which they don't like), what they do after school and the languages they speak.
Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department.
Melita is of Suriname Creole origin and was born in the Netherlands. She went to Suriname when she was 8/9 years, because her father was ill. When she was 12 they moved back to the Netherlands again, this was in 1982. Her parents are divorced, she has a younger brother (4) and a younger sister (2), and they only speak Dutch. Her father still lives in Suriname. She says that her grandmother speaks different Sranan than her. She prefers to speak Sranan, but she isn't allowed to speak this language at home. She is in the last form of primary school. Same girl as in 39A, 45M, 47K & 47L.
Marjorie is of Suriname Creole origin and was born in Suriname. She arrived in the Netherlands when she was only 1 year old. She has a younger sister (4) and two younger brothers (10). She isn't allowed to speak Sranan at home; according to her mother Sranan has a bad influence on Marjorie's command of Dutch. However with her cousin she speaks Sranan. She prefers to speak Sranan, because it is her own language. She finds Dutch easier to speak. When she speaks Dutch she has a Surinamese accent. Same girl as in 25C, 25D, 39A & 46L.
