Description:Recording took place during primary school hours (08:30 AM-03:30 PM) at a primary school in a separate classroom. Recording was done by Dorian de Haan (researcher) between 1984-1986.
Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch.
Dorian de Haan talks with two boys, Radjes (Sarnami Hindustani) and Eduardo (Antillean), about what they do after school, the languages they speak, Suriname and Curaçao, what they thought of the Netherlands when they arrived here, and about school.
Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department.
Eduardo is of Antillean origin and was born in Curaçao. When he was 2 his parents moved to St. Maarten and after 4 years the family moved back to Curaçao. Two years ago his parents moved to the Netherlands, Eduardo was 11 then. A lot of uncles and aunts also moved to the Netherlands. He lives in the Bijlmer, Amsterdam. He has one younger brother, with whom he speaks both Papiamento and Dutch, but Dutch is preferred. With his mother Eduardo speaks Papiamento, but his mother speaks Dutch with his brother. With his friends he speaks Papiamento (if they speak the language as well). He prefers to speak his own language (= Papiamento). When he speaks he stutters a bit. He is not on Dorian de Haan’s list.
Radjes is of Sarnami Hindustani origin. He was born in Suriname, and has been in the Netherlands for 4 years now. Currently he is in the last form of primary school and next year he wants to go to the LTS. He wants to be a car mechanic. At home he speaks Sarnami. His mother wants her children to speak Dutch, so she can learn the language too. Radjes prefers to speak Sarnami and he finds that his command of Sarnami is better then that of Dutch. His father is homesick for Suriname. He is the 2nd of 6 children. His sister (who is also in the last form of primary school) talks Dutch with their younger siblings. With his Surinamese friends he speaks Surinamese (unclear whether this is Sranan or Sarnami), also at school. According to Radjes swearing and calling names in Sarnami is worse then in Dutch. Same boy as in 4A, 4B, 20F, 20G, 22N, 24F, 40A, 42B & 55B.
