Description: | ENGLISH: This video is a class about body paintings, which are an important part of the Trumai culture. First, the teacher of the Boa Esperança village presents the topic of the class (in Portuguese; the school is bilingual). Next, the students started practicing body paintings on other young women and girls. They have the help of more experienced people from the village. The people in the video sometimes talk in Portuguese, sometimes in Trumai. The video was made outdoors; unfortunately the weather became windy and that caused some noise in the recording. Nevertheless, the recording is interesting for the information it contains. The video was taped by a Trumai young man. ----- PORTUGUÊS: Este vídeo é uma aula sobre pinturas corporais, que são uma parte importante da cultura Trumai. Primeiramente, o professor da aldeia Boa Esperança apresenta o tópico da aula (em Português; a escola é bilingüe). A seguir, os estudantes começam a praticar pinturas corporais em algumas moças e meninas. Elas são ajudadas por pessoas mais experientes da aldeia. As pessoas no vídeo às vezes falam em Português, às vezes em Trumai. O vídeo foi feito ao ar livre; infelizmente havia um pouco de vento e isto causou alguns ruídos na gravação. Mesmo assim, ela é interessante pela informação que contém. O vídeo foi gravado por um jovem Trumai. | |
The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc. | ||

The initial presentation is in Portuguese. During the painting process, the speakers talk in Trumai or in Portuguese. | ||
There are various participants in this session. The main ones are Speaker17, Speaker18, and the students K, M, and N. | ||
Speaker17 speaks Trumai and Portuguese. Portuguese is his main language. He can understand Trumai very well, but sometimes has difficulties in speaking it. His mother is Trumai, his late father was Kayabi. Speaker17 is the teacher of the Boa Esperança village, and it is considered one of the best teachers of the Xingu reserve. He is very interested in the work of documenting the Trumai language and culture. | ||
Speaker18 speaks Trumai and Portuguese. Portuguese is her main language. She can understand Trumai very well, but sometimes has difficulties in speaking it (she used to speak Trumai well when she was a child and spent more time with her mother; but gradually she spoke less and less when she became older and started having more contact with people outside her family). Her mother is Trumai, her late father was Kayabi (actually, her mother is genetically her grandmother, but Speaker18 regard her as mother). Speaker18 is trained as a health assistant and takes care of health affairs at her village. She has one son. | ||
Student-K lives in the Boa Esperança village. Both her parents are ethnically Trumai, but her father actually speaks Suyá. Student-K speaks Portuguese as her native language. She can understand Trumai and Suyá, although with limitations. | ||
Student-M lives in the Boa Esperança village. Both her parents are ethnically Trumai, but her father actually speaks Suyá. Student-M speaks Portuguese as her native language. She can understand Trumai and Suyá, although with limitations. | ||
Student-N lives in the Boa Esperança village. Her father is Trumai, her mother is Suyá. Student-N speaks Portuguese as her native language. She can understand Suyá; she can also understand Trumai, although with limitations. | ||
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A). | ||
