Description:ENGLISH: This sessions consists of the elicitation of lexical items that start with the glottal fricative /h/. These items are constrasted with other ones that start with a vowel. The purpose of this session is to test a hypothesis about the presence or absence of an initial /h/ for some specific lexical items. The items are tested in various environments (isolated, at the beginning of a sentence, in the middle of a sentence). ----- PORTUGUÊS: Esta sessão consiste na elicitação de itens lexicais que começam com a fricativa glotal /h/. Estes itens são contrastados com outros que começam em vogal. O objetivo desta sessão é testar uma hipótese sobre a presença ou ausência de um /h/ inicial em certos itens lexicais. Os itens são testados em vários ambientes (isolados, no começo de uma sentença, no meio de uma sentença).
The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
List of words recorded with a Trumai speaker in her home. The purpose of this list is to check the presence or absence of an initial /h/ for some specific lexical items.
The researcher conducts the elicitation in Portuguese. The consultant presents the requested data in Trumai.
There were two participants: the researcher and the native speaker of Trumai (Speaker3).
Speaker3 is a native speaker of Trumai. She lives in the Terra Preta village, in the central area of the Xingu Reserve. Both her parents were Trumai. Speaker3 lived in the Kamayurá village for many years, when she was still married. Nowadays she is separated, living with her daughter and son. She is middle-aged.
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
