The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
Elicitation about positional verbs.
The researcher presents the topic of the elicitation in Portuguese. Then, she asks "where" questions in Trumai. The consultant replies in Trumai, according to the scene being described. Sometimes the researcher asks questions about a particular scene in Portuguese, and the consultant replies also in Portuguese.
There were two participants: the Trumai consultant (Speaker11) and the researcher.
Speaker11 is a native speaker of Trumai, but she is also fully bilingual in Portuguese. She has been living in the city of Canarana since 1997, because her father works there. Her mother is Trumai, her father is Suyá. Speaker11 has a little son.
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
