Description:ENGLISH: The teacher of the Boa Esperança village teaches a class about rivers and other sources of water. The class is in Portuguese and shows how the teacher interacts with his students. This purpose of this video is to show how the village school works (in the school, there are classes in Portuguese and in Trumai). The recording was made by a Trumai young man, with the help of the researcher. ----- PORTUGUÊS: O professor da aldeia Boa Esperança dá uma aula sobre os rios e outras fontes de água. A aula é em Português e mostra como o professor interage com seus estudantes. O objetivo deste vídeo é mostrar como a escola da aldeia funciona (na escola, há aulas em Português e em Trumai). O vídeo foi filmado por um jovem Trumai, com a ajuda da pesquisadora.
The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
The teacher of the Boa Esperança village teaches a class about rivers and other sources of water.
The class is in Portuguese (in the school, there are classes in Portuguese and in Trumai).
The main speaker is the teacher, Speaker17. His students are three teenagers, who live in the Boa Esperança village.
Speaker17 speaks Trumai and Portuguese. Portuguese is his main language. He can understand Trumai very well, but sometimes has difficulties in speaking it. His mother is Trumai, his late father was Kayabi. Speaker17 is the teacher of the Boa Esperança village, and it is considered one of the best teachers of the Xingu reserve. He is very interested in the work of documenting the Trumai language and culture.
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
Student-M lives in the Boa Esperança village. Both her parents are ethnically Trumai, but her father actually speaks Suyá. Student-M speaks Portuguese as her native language. She can understand Trumai and Suyá, although with limitations.
Student-N lives in the Boa Esperança village. Her father is Trumai, her mother is Suyá. Student-N speaks Portuguese as her native language. She can understand Suyá; she can also understand Trumai, although with limitations.
Student-K lives in the Boa Esperança village. Both her parents are ethnically Trumai, but her father actually speaks Suyá. Student-K speaks Portuguese as her native language. She can understand Trumai and Suyá, although with limitations.
