Description:Monday 28th August 2006. Court Case 1, part II - Case 4, part I From 00:00:00:00 - 00:02:14:20: Court Case 1, continued from r06_v18_s4. Case 1 concernes the boat Yelingep, and the loss of K679.32, stolen by rascals. From 00:02:14:21 : Court Case 2. Ends around 00:27:50:00. Court Case 2 concerns a girl suspected of abortion. Ndówa is Miriam Damien’s BD, and D of Douglas Ndu’s Z. She had a miscarriage after carrying firewood, c. 5 months pregnant. Philip Wéni brought the case to make the point that abortion is illegal in PNG. From around 00:27:50:00 : Court Case 3 (beginning and ending of case unclear, gradual transition to Case 4). Case 3: disturbance of School grounds. After the stolen goods (see next case) were found on the road at Njiikigha, the boys from that area protested their innocence by a rowdy demonstration on school grounds, shouting and blowing conch, thereby disrupting exams. Exact beginning of Court Case 4 unclear. Court Case 4, part I. Case 4: Robbery at the school. All the utensils for domestic science classroom stolen by boy from Wulanga called Wéni (in red sleeveless shirt). He accused three others of being complicit, but they deny it. The magistrates tried to browbeat the others into confessing, but they don’t. This turns out to be the longest case. To test whether Wéni’s story about picking up the others by his canoe could work, they put them all in it – it alsmost sank! (see session r06_v21) Otherwise his testimony convincing, and the defence of the others was feeble. Court Case 4 continues onto r06_v20, r06_v21 and r06_v22. *These Court Cases are part of 5 Cases on 28th of August: an ‘open forum’ in presence of Philip Wéni, Rossel chief government officer at Tagula headquarters. All day proceedings, fairly full record on videotape. Cases run over tapes.
Ongoing documentation project, 1995 onwards.
