Description:The recording took place during a trip to Tsalawa 'the salt lake' between 9 and 11 a.m. The main objective was to portray the members of 042's family and other Awetí present at the occasion. The recording consists of moving as well as still images.
This project aims at the documentation of the Awetí Language and aspects of the Awetí culture. Awetí is a tupian language of a small speech community of the same name at the southern edge of the Amazon rain forest, in the Xingú reserve, Mato Grosso, central Brazil. The project was funded December 2000--April 2006 by the VolkswagenStiftung in the Documentation of Endangered Languages Programme (DOBES). The principal researcher, Sebastian Drude, initianted his research among the Aweti in 1998. Sabine Reiter participated as a freelancer in 2001 and as research assistant (including conducting field research) from 2002 on. The Awetí participated intensively in the project. At least one person of each houshold provided individual texts, the community agreed to be documented in day-to-day activities and during special events such as rituals. Several Awetí got involved in the further processing of the documentation data, especially by assisting in the creation of transcriptions and translations during the 9 field trips and in 8 visits of two to three speakers in Belém or Canarana.
The principal researcher accompanies 042 and his family to the salt lake Tsalawa and makes portrait of each family member and other people at the lake. In order of appearance these are: 030 and his family, 132, 042 and his family (tsal_portrait2.mpg), 042 and his family in their house (tsal_portrait3+5.mpg), 115 (tsal_portrait4.mpg), 060 and 045 (tsal_portrait6.mpg).
Awetí among the Awetí themselves. With the researchers, a mixture of Awetí and Protuguese, from both sides.
Several portraits of people (see list). 151 gets a tree up with SD.
042 is one of the principal shamans of the Awetí village. At the same time he is the brother-in-law of 083, one of the most prestigious men in the village. There are very strong family ties between these two houses due to the double cross-cousin constellation between the children of 042 and 083. 042 is the son of 043 and 044, the oldest cuple of the village. On the other hand, 157, the father of the current chief 146, claims that 042 is his illigitimate son, therefore he is considered a brother of 146 and also calls SD as 'younger brother'.
030 is a family father and oldest son of 026. 030 is a respected middle-aged man who is often indicated as a good speaker of Awetí. With his wife 074 he has many children, including the adult or almost adult 078 (man) 073 (boy) 079 (woman) 080 (girl). As his grandfather (same name!) was an important chief, he is highly respected even by the chief 146 and considered to be one of the leaders of the village. He is brother to 031 who left the village in June 2003 to live in the new village.
074 is the wife of 030 and mother of many children, among them the boys 078 and 073 and the girls 079 and 080. As most members of that family, she is a specialist in producing traditional products as hammocks and mats. 074 is also the sister of 132 and daughter of 076.
The principal researcher of the Aweti Project. Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (teaching and research assistant), Free University Berlin / Germany. Magister Artium in Linguistics (Free University of Berlin, 1997). Two-year DAAD fellowship at Museu Goeldi, Belém, 1997--1999. PhD in Linguistics (Free University of Berlin, 2002). Initiated field research among the Aweti in 1998. Field stays: July--October 1998, September--October 1999, June--August 2001, June--August 2002, May--July 2003, May--June 2004, Feb 2004, Nov 2004
132 is a half-brother of 118 and 074, son of the Trumai 075. He is married to 019, a sister of 018, one of the teachers. His mother, 076, is now married to the Kamayurá 077. He is a specialist in house-building (as is his step-father 077) and from 2003 on started to be trained as a singer. 132 is the son of 076 and a step son of 077. He is respected by many members of the tribe, including the chief, for his calm and modest mood. He is experienced in traditional techniques, especially house building. 132 is married to 019, one of 018's sisters, and has got some children.
115 is one of the oldest women of the village who lives on her own in the house of her only son 113 who left for the Kamayura village in 2002. She is the widow of 114 who was a brother of 057 (father of shaman and story teller 083). Since 115 does not have any direct relatives in the village she has got very little prestige. She is supplied with food by the rest of the community, esp. her direct neighbours (118 or 083), and in return helps in the house of these people.
060 is the first wife of 083 and daughter to 043 and 044, sister of 042, 064, 065. She is a kind of second mother to the children of 083 and her younger sister 064. Due to the fact that she does not have any children of her own she is less prestigious than her sister but at the same time disposes of more time of her own.
045 is the wife of 042 and sister of 083, both being prestigious shamans. Her father 057 funcioned as the last chief until 146 came to the village. For these reasons and due to the fact that she has got 8 own children (and 2 children born to her husband and her late younger sister) she is one of the most prestigious women in the Awetí community. Several children, the 049, a woman who worked as transcriber and informant for the Awetí Project, among them.
043 is the oldest man in the village. His wife 044 is also still alive. They have 4 children in the village (at least three other died), two men (042 and 065) and the two wifes of 085 (060 and 064). 043 belongs to a not very prestigious family within the Awetí community. He does not have the formal education of people like 157 who belongs to a traditional family of chiefs. The Xingu-society used to be organized strictly hierarchically, and only people from "upper-class"-families received a formation as story-teller and keeper of traditions. 043, though, has great knowledge of herbal medicine and does have the reputation of being a powerful shaman.
151 is the third child (second son) of the main chief of the village, 146, and his first wive, 147. He is not married yet and lives in his father's house. He is one of the main consultirs of the Awetí project, being the most skilled compter user and best literate (with 018) in the village.
067 is now the wife of 077 and with him has some children. She was married to 075, and is mother of 074 and 132. She is daughter of 057, so is a half sister of 083, story teller and father of 085. She is a specialist in producing mats (esteiras) and hammocks.
073 is the second son and child of 030 and 074.
