Part 1 shows packages of salt ashes which are brought to the village by bicycle for further processing. Part 2 and 3 show the further processing of salt and other women's activities taking place inside the abandoned house of 009 and 010 who have left the village to settle in another place. Part 4 shows how salt is filled into the salt baskets. The recording were made on the 25th and 26th of July and on the 1st of August. The session is of cultural value only and a still image may be used to illustrate a stage within the process of making salt. | |
| This project aims at the documentation of the Awetà Language, a Tupian language of a small speech community in central Brazil. It is funded for the years from November 2000 to March 2005 by the VolkswagenStiftung in the Documentation of Endangered Languages Programme. The principal researcher, Sebastian Drude, initiated his research among the Awetà in 1998. The assistant researcher, Sabine Reiter, started to work in the project in 2001. | ||
| The session consisting of 4 recordings shows different stages in the processing of salt. Part 1 shows packages of salt ashes which are brought to the village by bicycle for further processing. Part 2 and 3 show the further processing of salt and other women's activities taking place inside the abandoned house of 009 and 010 who have left the village to settle in another place. Part 4 shows how salt is filled into the salt baskets. The recording were made on the 25th and 26th of July and on the 1st of August. Part 1 of the session shows packages of salt ashes at their arrival in the Awetà village. Part 2/3 shows how the salt ashes are put into a filter to wash out the salt substance. The liquid is then put on the fire for the water to evaporate, leaving the salt in the bowl. Since the procedure takes a whole night the two women (032 and her mother 027) engage in other activities. 027 is weaving a hammock and manioc is processed. In part 4 147 fills salt into baskets she made for this purpose. | ||

| Part 1: The couple 146 and 147 arrive with their salt packages from the salt lake. Part 2/3: 001, the older brother of the teacher 018 is the nephew of 027 and cousin of 032. He has the function of a kind of mediator between the women of his family and the two researchers who do not know enough Awetà to communicate directly with the women. He also gives them additional cultural information. Part 4: 147 is the chief's first wife whose mother tongue is Kamayurá. She is the only woman in the Awetà village who is fluent in Portuguese and therefore the only woman immediately accessible to the researchers. | ||

| 146 is the main chief of the village. His father, 157, left the village in the seventies, giving up his chief-hood. 146 grew up with the Kamayurá, got in contact with the brazilian air-force and moved outside the village for some years in order to study and eventually take over a position in the self-administration of the Park. He then met his older wife (147) at the Kamayurá and decided to go back into the Park before finishing his studies. Later he married 147's younger sister, 148. Both do not speak (but understand) AwetÃ. When 146's father was asked to come back as a chief, he declined, but suggested his oldest son, 146, to take the position with his advice. The community constructed a large house around 1996 in order to receive 146 as a real chief. SInce then, he is in charge. | ||
| 001 lived in the village until 2003. He is an older one of the many sons of 009 (Kamayurá) and 010, who left the village in 2002. Of his family, only 018 and his sister 019 (married to 132) stayed in the main village. 001 is one of the best speaers of Portuguese among the AwetÃ. | ||
| 147 is the daughter of a Kamayurá chief and the first wife of the Awetà chief 146 with whom she has five children. She has got a good knowledge of Portuguese and, due to this competence, is one of the few women who enters directly in contact with the researchers. She is a good informant for cultural matters. | ||
| 018 is the older of the two teachers in the village. He is one of the many sons of 009 (Kamayurá) and 010, who left the village in 2002. Of his family, only 018 and his sister 019 (marreid to 132) stayed in the main village. He works for the Awetà Project as the first consultant, doing transcriptions and helping with translations and elicitation. | ||

| 027 used to be married to 026 from whom she separated. She has seven children. Two of her children died at an early age. She is the half-sister of 018's mother 010. | ||
| 032 is the daughter of 026 and 027. Several years ago she separated from her husband 113 who went to live in another village. She has one boy, 040. 032 is living with her mother. | ||
