Description: This session consisting of 6 parts recorded between the 27th and the 31st of July shows a sequence of different stages of processing manioc. It is meant to illustrate the description of how to prepare manioc given in 074_manioc. In the last clip there are some scenes of salt production.

This project aims at the documentation of the Awetí Language and aspects of the Awetí culture. Awetí is a tupian language of a small speech community of the same name at the southern edge of the Amazon rain forest, in the Xingú reserve, Mato Grosso, central Brazil. The project was funded December 2000--April 2006 by the VolkswagenStiftung in the Documentation of Endangered Languages Programme (DOBES). The principal researcher, Sebastian Drude, initianted his research among the Aweti in 1998. Sabine Reiter participated as a freelancer in 2001 and as research assistant (including conducting field research) from 2002 on. The Awetí participated intensively in the project. At least one person of each houshold provided individual texts, the community agreed to be documented in day-to-day activities and during special events such as rituals. Several Awetí got involved in the further processing of the documentation data, especially by assisting in the creation of transcriptions and translations during the 9 field trips and in 8 visits of two to three speakers in Belém or Canarana.

The first part of the session shows 068, 016's daughter, sieving the manioc mash by means of a mat (esteira). By this procedure part of the poison contained in the manioc root is washed out. Part 2 shows the manioc mass being placed on a wooden shelf behind the house to dry in the sun. Part 3 shows how the manioc is boiled and how perereba (a sweet liquid made of manioc) is made by boiling the manioc for a very long time. Part 4 shows how the manioc is made into different types of beiju which are either baked on both sides or on one side only. The teacher 018 and his sister, 019, who bakes the beijus, explain the procedure. She also shows the fabrication of salt baskets. Part 5 and 6 show 147 and her daughter 150 scraping off the peel of the manioc roots and grating it. They use tin-lids as scraping tools. 147's younger daughter 152 helps the two women (part 6).

Much Awetí, even with the researcher SD. He sometimes speaks in Portuguese, and sometimes other participants speak Portuguese to the researcher.

The teacher 018 shows and explains to SR different stages in the processing of manioc (part 2,3). His sister 019, who is preparing the manioc, also gives explanations which he translates into Portuguese (part 3,4). While 147 and 150 are working, 147 and SR talk to each other (part 5,6).

The oldest daughter of 016 recently got married. She lives in the village of her husband and is only temporarily visiting the Awetí village where she grew up.

018 is the older of the two teachers in the village, having participated in an education programme for primary school teaching in the villages offered by an NGO (ISA). He is one of the many sons of 009 (Kamayurá) and 010, who left the village in 2002. Of his family, only 018 and his sister 019 (marreid to 132) stayed in the main village. He works for the Awetí Project as the first consultant, doing transcriptions and helping with translations and elicitation. 018 is one of the three main informants of the Awetí community.

019 is the younger sister of the teacher 018 to whom she has a close relationship. She is married to 132 with whom she has two children. They live in the house next to the researcher's house.

150 is the oldest daughter of 146 and his older wife 147. She still lives with her family in her father's house.

147 is the daughter of a Kamayurá chief and the first wife of the Awetí chief 146 with whom she has five children. She has got a good knowledge of Portuguese and, due to this competence, is one of the few women who enters directly in contact with the researchers. She is a good informant for cultural matters.

152 is 146 and 147's younger daughter.
