Description:The recording took place under the roof outside the researchers' house behind a windscreen around 1 p.m. This session is immediately following session hartmann_book. There is an audio recording only.
This project aims at the documentation of the Awetí Language and aspects of the Awetí culture. Awetí is a tupian language of a small speech community of the same name at the southern edge of the Amazon rain forest, in the Xingú reserve, Mato Grosso, central Brazil. The project was funded December 2000--April 2006 by the VolkswagenStiftung in the Documentation of Endangered Languages Programme (DOBES). The principal researcher, Sebastian Drude, initianted his research among the Aweti in 1998. Sabine Reiter participated as a freelancer in 2001 and as research assistant (including conducting field research) from 2002 on. The Awetí participated intensively in the project. At least one person of each houshold provided individual texts, the community agreed to be documented in day-to-day activities and during special events such as rituals. Several Awetí got involved in the further processing of the documentation data, especially by assisting in the creation of transcriptions and translations during the 9 field trips and in 8 visits of two to three speakers in Belém or Canarana.
This file was generated from an IMDI 1.9 file and transformed to IMDI 3.0. The substructure of Genre is replaced by two elements named "Genre" and "SubGenre". The original content of Genre substructure was: Interactional = 'conversation', Discursive = 'Unspecified', Performance = 'Unspecified'. These values have been added as Keys to the Content information.
The session consists of a conversation between 026, 030 and 083 which is following the recording session hartmann_book in which they are discussing the Xingu-book written by Hartmann (1986). They are dealing with several subjects of conversation like old villages, etc.
The conversation among the three men is exclusively in Awetí. SD may occasionally add a remark in Portuguese or in Awetí.
026 is the father of 030. 083 is respected by both as one of the two chief's of the Awetí community. SD does not interfere much with the interaction between the three consultants.
030 is a family father and oldest son of 026. 030 is a respected middle-aged man who is often indicated as a good speaker of Awetí. With his wife 074 he has many children, including the adult or almost adult 078 (man) 073 (boy) 079 (woman) 080 (girl). As his grandfather (same name!) was an important chief, he is highly respected even by the chief 146 and considered to be one of the leaders of the village. He is brother to 031 who left the village in June 2003 to live in the new village.
083 is one of the few elders of the village. His father funcioned as the last chief, and he is also considered to be a (at least, secondary) chief by many members of the community. He is the most prestigeous story teller living in the village before the arrival of 157 in 2005, and one of the most powerful shamans, too. He is married to 060 (no children) and 064, whith whom he has many children, one of the teachers, 085, and 086, another transcriber for the Project, among them.
The main researcher of the Aweti Project. See description of Collector.
The principal researcher of the Aweti Project. Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (teaching and research assistant), Free University Berlin / Germany. Magister Artium in Linguistics (Free University of Berlin, 1997). Two-year DAAD fellowship at Museu Goeldi, Belém, 1997--1999. PhD in Linguistics (Free University of Berlin, 2002). Initiated field research among the Aweti in 1998. Field stays: July--October 1998, September--October 1999, June--August 2001, June--August 2002, May--July 2003, May--June 2004, Feb 2005, Nov 2005
026 is one of the few elder members of the Awetí. He is son of an important chief, but his father died before he could teach him sufficient of his knowledge and skills for 026 feel save being a chief himself; therefore he rejects to be any more than a regular member of the village. His oldest son, 030, is a very respected adult. His second son and his doughters left to the second village in 2002.
