Description:This session is the second in a sequence of several audio/video-sessions, followed by several audio-sessions without corresponding video sessions, in which 157 tells different myths and other stories belonging to the Awetí oral history. Altogether it takes him 12 hours for three days running. This recording was realized inside the Kamayurá village in the afternoon (after the Kwarup at the Yawalapiti village). ###
This project aims at the documentation of the Awetí Language, a tupian language of a small speech community in central Brazil. It is funded for 2000/2001 by the VolkswagenStiftung in the Documentation of Endangered Languages Programme. The principal researcher, Sebastian Drude, initianted his research among the Awetí in 1998.
This file was generated from an IMDI 1.9 file and transformed to IMDI 3.0. The substructure of Genre is replaced by two elements named "Genre" and "SubGenre". The original content of Genre substructure was: Interactional = 'Unknown', Discursive = 'Unknown', Performance = 'oral-history, historical-narrative'. These values have been added as Keys to the Content information.
The session consists of a story/ part of a story told by 157 who is the most prestigious story-teller of the Awetí community. ###
157 tells the stories in Awetí. Portuguese is the contact language by which Sebastian communicates with 157, but he also speaks Awetí at a basic level.
157 treats Sebastian like a kind of foster son and also calls him "son". In return, Sebastian considers 157 to be his "father" and accordingly treats him with the highest respect. XXX
157 used to be the chief of the Awetí village until approximately 1970. In 2001, he continues to live among the Kamayurá. His son 146 is the current principal chief in the Awetí village. 157 is arguably the person who best knows the oral tradition in Awetí, and one of the strongest shamans of the region.
